The gentlest of gentleman-- still a man, but endlessly gentle. He doesn't break and go feral, his nature is calm. His flirting is words so soft only you can hear, and his touches are steady. Yoshitsugu is not exactly handsy, but it would be unfair to call him hands off. He is appropriate, touching and teasing enough to support (and thrill) you, but never intending for you to be so flustered you can't enjoy what he is doing. The point is not to fluster you badly, only to make you feel like you are being cared for and courted. It’s important to understand that just because he’s soft with you, he’s not toothless: you wouldn’t have met him if he wasn’t one of Hideyoshi’s most brilliant men, Otani has bite. But the sharp edge of his mind is not something he means to use on you. You are special. It is important to him that you feel special and sure of your place in his esteem. He will never forget anniversaries or your favorite anything.

Just because the sharpness of his mind isn't something he means to direct at you doesn't mean he wants you to make yourself small or dull. He'll be thrilled by verbal wordplay, even the kind that doesn't start out or isn't meant to be flirtatious. Show him your mind! You don't have to be brilliant, you just have to be honest and realistic about what you know of the world. He knows your knowledge doesn't totally overlap and he likes that. Watching you pursue your interests and learn more about the things that make you glow makes him glow. Tell him something he doesn't know and then make a joke about it. You'll be treated to a slow grin and a flash of unspoken fire in his eyes. It's not covetous, but it shows its hunger and it is meant to. He can wait to feast, but he won't keep the fact that he finds you tasty to himself.

You know those quietly confident people, who in modern day can parallel park flawlessly and always pop jar lids on the first try, and aren't obnoxious about it but also don't ever doubt themselves so they keep right on doing things exactly right? That's Otani. If you are anxious, he is perfect for you: his steadiness is unshakeable, he can talk you through your catastrophizing without ever being patronizing, and he will never, ever leave you alone to make things worse in your head if you allow him to be there with you. He knows the way. He just does. You can trust in that, and in him, and in his deep affection for you.

The spice (and the rest of the nice)...

If you need to be led into the physical aspect of your relationship, he won’t push (he would find that distasteful) but he will nudge you as you take your steps. Small nudges to give you a sense of possible progressions. He’ll slip his tongue in your mouth and his hand behind the back of your neck, both touches gentle but utterly present. If you are holding hands while walking through a garden, he’ll look straight ahead as he slides his middle finger along the inside of your palm and softly says that he is looking forward to seeing this path at night with you. He’s not boring--ever-- but he is never crass. Just the most warmly, gently kind of suggestive, and you are always free to take or leave what he is suggesting.

Likes to switch positions at least a couple times during each round of sex, not because the switch itself is rote or necessary but because he is trying his best not to bore you (sweetest heart!). Craves, again, your honesty here-- he wants you to feel very safe telling him what you like (however you are comfortable telling him) and what you don't. He wants you to be comfortable hearing those things from him, too, but he's as careful with his words as he is with your body. Masamune’s concern wars with his duty to all his work obligations… and pretty much wins. There’s just a lot of internal conflict because he wants to be with her and be the one to take care of her, but he realizes he may not be the most skilled person to take care of her, and it’s important to him that she have the best. Thankfully, love counts for a lot. 💚

Of course he’s going to do as much work as possible sitting beside her as she rests— because of course he put her on bedrest immediately, NO BACKTALK— as long as that won’t disturb her recovery. He wants to make her soups but worries his may not be restorative or good enough for her? He nearly frets himself into illness!

His need for hand contact skyrockets. He’ll read and work one handed so he can link their fingers while she sleeps and do that gentle palm stroke he loves so much. Even gentler, now. He lets only the most trusted Date into his work area (her new daytime rest area) so that her sleep is protected. If Kojuro’s not there to keep him from it, what Masamune wants to do is lay down with her, hold her, and snuggle. He absolutely tries to take her fever and absolutely feels terrible for even thinking of that in case it negatively impacts the Date. Again, nearly frets himself into illness. Masamune, you’re enough just nearby!

He very, very shyly offers to read to her in case she’s bored. He wants her to sit next to him and lean onto his side. When they have been together a long time, he may offer to tell her a story of his own making, but for now he offers poems and stories from books. Masamune is a perfect reader for a tired person: his voice is soft, low, and gentle, which makes everything feel good and interesting, but is also so soothing it’s easy to drift back to sleep…

The first time he’s peevish at her for no good reason, she says “I’m going back to the kitchen to be with pleasant people,” and he nearly pops a blood vessel. “WHAT did you say?” “I said ‘I’m going back to the kitchen, to be with pleasant people.’” And then she gets up and goes, and when she slides the door shut behind her he stares at it. She didn’t fight him. She didn’t, Ieyasu noticed, even say he was wrong. She just left. And he’s so mad about it but storming after her into the kitchen feels like exactly the wrong thing to do, somehow. A trap. So he stays, and seethes. And thinks. And resolves to one-up her as soon as possible. He thinks about her all night and dreams about her, too.

She doesn’t exactly give as good as she gets, because if anyone talked to Ieyasu the way he talks to them, it wouldn’t end well. But she keeps not taking his bait and just leaving or changing the subject when he gets pissy, and eventually—it doesn’t take long— he realizes he can have peace if he’s just less antagonistic toward her, because she’s not giving him any kindling for his rage. After that, he’ll ask very pointed questions about what she is doing. They are not elegant questions, he’s thrown by the way he likes her. 🍓♥️ But she remains gracious and teases at the exact level he can handle: enough to make him feel like he is being let in on a game, not enough to make him feel like he is being shut out of a game. “I’m sewing, what does it look like? Do you want me to teach you?” She is honest with him, and there are very precious little tendrils of trust (or wanting to trust) snaking out of him in her direction.

As they grow more comfortable and those tendrils get to take root and really grow, he’s more likely to put a hand at the back of her head to pull her in for a forehead kiss and mumble “Why do I even bother with you?” but she gets him back with a light “The question I ask myself every day,” until he huffs and she hides her grin in his chest. Her level of well-adjusted rubs off on him, to everyone’s benefit (Tadatsugu is so proud).

When she feels safe in her place with him she definitely throws linens or something at his face if he’s being ridiculous in private. Picture: Ieyasu, with a white cloth draped over his seated form, like a short ghost. “I’ll kill you,” he whispers. “You’ll have to catch me first!” she laughs, and speeds out of the room before he can even get the cloth off.

Saizo will tease (he is breathing), and even be a bit of a bully about her taking medicine or rest. 100% threatens to tie her down not in the fun way if she doesn’t get in bed on her own. But once she sleeps he’s definitely putting a hand to her head with a very light touch as not to disturb her rest. He mixes the nastiest but most effective medicines and tells her he’s sweetened them before he hands them over. He has not sweetened them and when she gags he suggests she hurry up and get better then, hmm? BUT. He’s weak to her pleading for small things, and if she’s brave enough to ask him to hold her hand while she tries to fall asleep, he does it with a silent smile. The joke about her neediness is right there on the tip of his tongue, but he usually keeps it in his mouth.

Ieyasu tuts at her for letting herself get sick, but he moves her bedding to his office (more like has extra nice bedding moved there) so he can “keep an eye on her” while he works. He rolls his eyes while he declares this as though that’s not exactly what he does, watch her the entire time. He also mixes the nastiest, most effective medicines, but does not tell her he has sweetened them. He has. Sometimes. He’s not going to give her an incentive to get sick! Hmph! He puts just a little honey in all her cups of water, too. He does put Toramatsu on duty bringing cold compresses in and out of his office, but everyone knows it would be Very Stupid to offer to take care of her. When they’re alone Ieyasu puts a hand to her forehead and to his and mutters Why aren’t you better yet?, very soft and mournful. At night he snuggles her like air between them is the enemy.

Shingen is more hands off but much more open with his concern. He’s the one who notices she’s not feeling well, or looks like she’s getting there, and gently but firmly tells her she’s to rest. He has Kansuke work up medicines for however she’s feeling. He doesn’t stay with her, but he comes to visit every break he gets and brings her treats and funny stories, and has her cuddle against him while he tells them. Shingen gives her every kind of good touch she gives him when he’s not feeling well: he holds her hand and rubs above her thumb, her massages her calf muscles one at a time, he combs her hair for her and styles it simply and neatly, and makes sure she feels clean. If she tells him not to fuss he holds her face and lightly scolds her that it’s his job as a man to fuss over his woman. Then he pulls her close and tells her if she wants him not to fuss, she needs to work on resting up and getting better, and only that. When she agrees, he kisses her hair and praises his woman for all her good sense and tells her he needs her strong and healthy so he can go back to showing her off and knowing he’s the one that makes her cheeks hot. He knows better than most that encouraging words can go far. ♥️

He’s not mad at you for not being there but he sure is mad that you’re not there. If you come home from errands after he arrives, you cannot be surprised by his moping and sniping and following you around because he does this every time. But you also can’t give in right away and leave things all over because you know you may not get the chance to put them up until tomorrow.  “Are you quite finished?” he’ll drawl like he’s not in danger of popping out of his skin if you don’t hurry up and properly notice him already. When you are finished putting things up, you can save the day by slipping your hand into his and giving him a squeeze. He can deny his desire for this until his next trip, but you know the truth: once he gets your hand, he doesn’t let go. Little welcome home pecks until he tells you to knock it off (it will take longer than you think) will never go amiss. Comte loves her scent so much (from their very first interaction) that he can’t stand it in the beginning of her days in the mansion, and since obviously he can’t stand staying away from her any better, all his agonized brain can think of to do is take her to a parfumerie to get her something new to cover it up. Then the night before their planned outing he realizes he’ll probably be the same way about her perfume and soon she will be applying it to her body and the fragrance will be in his house, clinging to every curtain... a very dark night of the soul passes, then a very long carriage ride where she is smiling at him from the opposite seat and also somehow present in every molecule of air around him. They finally make it into town and then outside the shop he suddenly begs her to stop, says he’ll buy her any and all perfumes she desires but please, will she take pity on him and not wear them until she is home safe in her own time?

After all they’ve been though, Hanzo still thinks, longer and harder than he would like, of sabotaging her work for the Tokugawa— he explicitly considers how much work it would be for him to let her put Ieyasu in real danger and get banished or sentenced to death, just so he could scoop her up out of the forest or a cell, lick up all her tears, and put her somewhere only for the two of them. Every time she smiles at him in Hamamatsu he’s relieved he hasn’t done it yet, and every time she smiles at someone else he’s furious with his dawdling. She inadvertently secures her place when she whispers one night that his bedding is so comfortable... and then nods off to sleep. He could give her something else but not replicate the comfort of his room, so he makes his (grumpy!!! tenuous!!!) peace with her talking to other people.

...still, sometimes Hanzo tells her he’s leaving earlier than he is to go off on shinobi business, and he hangs out god knows where (Tadatsugu’s room?) and only actually leaves after he’s watched her bathe—which is discomfiting, he is not used to seeing her unclothed and not doing something about it— and redress, and put herself to bed. Perhaps one time he stays and nuzzles at her hair, takes a deep lungful of her before truly leaving. Perhaps more than once. Certainly not every time. He is not so weak as that.
