Hiya, hope you're well! :) so I'm a polo player and groom who's moved to an area where there aren't any polo yards, so I've gotten a job as a yardie for a steeplechase trainer. Eventually I'll be learning to ride out, not only for work but as a useful skill for myself! Race riding is so different from polo riding though, I figured you'd be the person to ask for tips on transitioning? All the exercise riders I've asked have been doing it their whole life, so can't articulate what it is they do x
I don’t steeplechase and I’m sure flat racing is quite different from steeplechasing, I’m assuming the steeple horses would have a need to be more adjustable and you may be more inclined to ride with a half cross more often...
With that said, I’d say one of the biggest things is developing your arms and core more because racehorses have a tendency to lean into the bridle and pull more than riding horses so upper body strength is super important. You’ll probably need to ride with both a cross and half cross, so learning how to change between those would be important.
Even if a horse is getting tough and wanting to get away from you, try not to brace because they’ll just run into the contact and keep going. Half halting and release is important even if they only slow for a quarter of a stride, there needs to be some form of release to encourage them to soften
