I noticed in some of the pics you've posted people are waving Catalan flags with a blue triangle on the side, like Cuba and Puerto Rico's flags. I thought the Catalan flag was just the red and yellow stripes, do they both mean the same thing?

The Catalan flag (called senyera) is, as you say, a yellow background with 4 red bars. This is our historical flag that we have had since the Middle Ages.

The flag that you mention is the estelada, the flag that means independence for catalonia or for the catalan countries. there are 2 widely used estelades: the blue one (also called the historical one) and the red one.

The blue estelada simply means independence. It was created in 1918, based on a previous design from 1906 that had the star in the center instead of on a side.

The red estelada is the leftist estelada. It includes a red star, international symbol of socialism.

There are also less used estelades that you can see from time to time, such as the anarchist estelada (not very used since most anarchists simply use the much more well-known red estelada),

the gay estelada (this one has recently gained a lot of popularity and it’s very common to see in demonstrations, though by far not as much as the blue and red ones),

the ecologist estelada,

and the Barça estelada

among others.

You know, I'm curious to see how WWII and Arthurian legend will be wound into this. Obviously this is Michael Bay so I won't be surprised if it gets fudged and all these plot points clutter and crowd the movie, but it actually seems like we'll be getting substantial parts of lore for Bayverse so I kinda have hopes. I imagine there will be a fair bit of flashbacks, which is where the aforementioned stuff will come in.

Yo Alex, I know that darktalia is kinda your specialty, so I wanted to ask you: how do you think nations deal with dismemberment? Do you think they have to wait to have a limb put back, or nation magic takes care of it, or what?

i’ve always seen the dirt children as basically immortal ideas wearing meatsuits™. their soul and wellbeing is ultimately tied to the wellbeing of their people. so mechanical injuries do not normally leave scars or cause permanent harm unless it’s an injury symbolising a traumatic and major historical event. (like when rome killed carthage or rome himself died). otherwise; they can even, well, respawn their entire body from afresh. 

so normally; my personal headcanon is that if a limb gets chopped off and/or goes missing, it can regenerate from nothing like some freaky-ass human starfish. they make axolotls jealous. (i’m sure at some point their leaders wonder if these dirt children hold the secrets to stem cell research, but i digress). in practice: many of them prefer to just reattach the limb because then the fucker heals much faster than having to regenerate the whole thing, bones, muscles and blood and all. speed of regeneration would also be affected by how well they’re doing (so during ww2 alfred probably has some wolverine-level healing). 

you can imagine this poses…quite a number of problems for unsuspecting medics treating a soldier whom they have no idea is the Nation™. (’son, i’m very sorry but we have to…cut off your arm. gangrene, you know.’ ‘aw come on doc, didn’t i just say help me dig out all the shrapnel or it won’t heal right’ ‘it’s INFECTED already your fingers are BLACK’ ‘ i’ve had worse i’ll be fine after 2 nights of good sleep are you going to help or not’ ‘nurse please get me the form to document that this patient cannot consent because he is clearly in shock due to blood loss and raging sepsis’)

This reminds me of an article I read last (school) year; it's old news but I was wondering if you heard about it? Apparently the Spanish government says they'll instantly oppose any Scottish bid to join the EU, because there were Catalan flags being flown during one of THEIR rallies. They're willing to make other countries suffer in order to keep control of Catalonia. Of course, this applies to the Basque nation, as well.

We heard plenty of how Spain wanted to block Scotland from joining the EU (the Spanish gov wouldn’t stop talking about it) but I hadn’t heard that it was because of the flags. I think it’s just because Scotland would be an ally for us and them winning the independence referendum would encourage us (back then we were having the 9N consult).
