Report: Apple Takes The Lead In Streaming-Box Marketshare
This according to Slice Intelligence. Here’s Jaimee Minney writing on their blog:
Sales of TV streaming devices have been flat over the period, with sales only surging only during the holiday shopping period, as well as at times where prices have fallen; most notably when Amazon introduced the $35 Fire TV stick in November 2014 and when the Apple TV decreased in priced last March, from $99 to $70. With the addition of the new Apple TV, Apple has the largest share of the streaming TV hardware market, at 31 percent, followed closely by Amazon, at 28 percent.
According to the date in the report, this number is a result of sales of the Apple TV 3 combined with sales of the new Apple TV. Can you take this data seriously? It’s hard to say. Apple hasn’t released sales numbers for Apple TV, and those other companies almost certainly haven’t either. That’s not to say Slice Intelligence isn’t being scientific in their approach, I just think it’s wise to take these reports with a grain of salt. If the numbers are a reflection of the actual marketshare, it’s impressive that Apple was able to overtake the Amazon Fire TV given that Amazon no longer carries Apple TV on its online store, though these numbers would include Apple TV 3 sales from before Amazon pulled the plug.
Also, I can’t refer to this piece from Slice Intelligence without pointing out how cringe-inducing their headline is: “Apple TV Sends Fanboys Streaming. Do better, Slice Intelligence.
