It has rained almost all day, so we didn’t go out to paint. The class did still life but I didn’t want to so I went out by myself and explored the town on my bicycle. I made one small sketch. Went to market. It is only open Monday + Friday in the morning and is quite a bright stop. They have clothes as well as fish and fowl. I bought some ribbons and some stockings, got a nice bunch of sweet peas for a Franc…
Mabel E. Dixon
Dixon traveled to France in 1927, where she studied drawing and painting. Her small travel diary--stamped from a store in Des Moines, Iowa--provides the only information we have about her life.

At one time we had as many as twenty-six children in the school with all eight grades. We had an old building with a big black heating stove in the back and kerosene lamps in brackets on each side of the room... On cold mornings we would set around the stove to get warmed up and also set our ink bottles around the stove to thaw out.

I learned to take care of baby chickens and how to gather the eggs... We bought a product called 'water glass' from the drug store by the quart to mix with water to put freshly gathered eggs into in a big stone jar. This would form a substance like jello and preserve the eggs for our use at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
