A Quick Story About A Small Video Store
Capitola Video will be unfortunately closing it’s doors in about ten days, it’s been the place I’ve rented most of my movies for....well for my entire life and it’s devastating to see it go. I know a post like this means basically nothing to anybody who’s never been to the store, but I had to get this little story out somewhere and where better than here?
I must have rented Capitola Video’s copy of Jak and Daxter at least 10 times from that place before I got my own copy. I can vividly remember the first time playing it, being the copy I rented from their small video game section right next to the horror movies (Oh which I spent plenty of time reading the backs of, too terrified to rent, but super intrigued from day one). It seems like an insignificant thing in the grand scheme of my history playing video games, or frankly in my history of even renting video games, but somewhere deep down it means so much to me.
A sampling of the remaining video games in the store, which the owners sold to me remembering how often I would rent some of these.
There’s an immense charm to the store itself. Everything from the “New Release” section and it’s high shelves, the “comedy” section that absolutely dominates the row in which it’s found, all the way to the individual bags of gummi worms the owner would sell for $1 after buying the things in bulk from the grocery store next door. Hell there was even an extensive porn section behind a door labeled “Adults Only” in big yellow bubble letters, and I’m positive nobody was ever judged for using it.
As far as recent events go, I was recently sold their entire old PS2 rental section for $40, as the owners wife remembered how often I used to rent from it as a kid. I had to sell off most of them as I simply didn’t have the room to keep all of them, but i was deeply touched that they even remembered that fact about me, let alone wanted to sell me that piece of the stores history. I’ll be back in to say goodbye to the owners before they move out of town, I just wanted to share a little bit about the place here because even though It’s not something I would ever really talk about, it is one that means a lot to me just under the surface.
And guess which copy of which game I'll treasure forever? Definitely need to get a frame for this thing.
Unfortunately, the Geminola shop in NYC closed, but it still continues to inspire me.
