Hawaii was originally called the Sandwich Isles. This is what Captain James C. Cook named the islands in 1778 in honor of his patron the Earl of Sandwich. Cook worked on a Yorkshire farm in his youth before winning an apprenticeship with a merchant sailing company at age 17. He cut his teeth as a mariner on shipping voyages in the choppy waters of North and Baltic Seas, and spent the next decade rising through the ranks and mastering the art of navigation. Cook first rose to prominence as a cartographer during the Seven Years’ War, when his detailed charts of the Saint Lawrence River helped the British pull off a surprise attack against French-held Quebec. In the early 1760s, he was given a ship and tasked with charting the island of Newfoundland off the coast of Canada. The map he produced was so accurate that it was still in use in the 20th century. Cook’s skill at charting the seas would later become a crucial tool in his explorer’s arsenal. He won command of his first round-the-world voyage in part because he could be trusted to navigate in uncharted territory and bring home precise maps of the lands he discovered. Cook’s career as an explorer began in August 1768, when he left England on HM Bark Endeavour with nearly 100 crewmen in tow. Their journey was ostensibly a scientific expedition—they were charged with sailing to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus across the face of the sun—but it also had a hidden military agenda. Cook carried sealed orders instructing him to seek out the “Great Southern Continent,” an undiscovered landmass that was believed to lurk somewhere near the bottom of the globe. The explorer followed orders and sailed south to the 40th parallel, but found no evidence of the fabled continent. He then turned west and circled New Zealand, proving it was a pair of islands and not connected to a larger landmass. Cook would later resume his search for the Southern Continent during his second circumnavigation of the globe in the early 1770s, and came tantalisingly close to sighting Antarctica before pack ice forced him to turn back. #GlobeFacts #WorldFacts via History.com. Considered the national dish of Scotland, haggis is a savory pudding containing sheep’s pluck, minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally encased in the animal’s stomach and simmered for about 3 hours. Haggis is popularly assumed to originate in this country but there is no historical evidence that would prove it. Continues tomorrow! Globes! www.bellerbyandco.com
Legend has it that the Greek goddess of love–Aphrodite–was born in Cyprus. The country is also known as the playground of the Gods. Cyprus, officially the Republic of Cyprus, is an island country in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. The island country is divided into two parts. The North and the South. The northern part is called the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” while the southern part is called the “Independent Republic of Cyprus” or the “Greek Cyprus.” Cyprus is the third largest and third most populous island in the Mediterranean. Some of the world’s oldest water wells can be found in Cyprus. The largest bank in Cyprus is owned by the Cypriot Orthodox Church. The church also plays a significant role in the social and political life of the island’s people. Alexander the Great seized the island from the Assyrians, Egyptians and Persians in 333 BC. Cyprus became independent from the British in 1960, on August 16th. However, they celebrate their independence day on the 1st of October every year. The island nation had seen its golden era during the Copper and Bronze Ages. At that time, the country was among the wealthiest of nations. #CyprusFacts #TurkeyFacts via TheFactFile. Belgium has the largest urbanised population in Europe – where 98 percent of the population live in urban areas and cities, also among the highest rate in the world. Belgium is also one of the most cabled countries in the world, where some 97 percent of Belgian households receive cable TV. Belgium’s highway can be seen from the moon – the almost 100 percent-lit highway network is one of the few man-made structures seen that far at night. Belgium is among the top 10 countries for the highest road and railroad density, although TomTom ranks Brussels as the seventh most congested city in Europe. Belgium has the most cycling Tour de France victories of any country except France – famous Belgian tour winners include Eddy Merckx and Philippe Thys. Merckx is the only cyclist to have won the general, points and king of the mountains classifications in the same tour, and is among a small group of cyclists who won a tour on their first attempt. Belgium is the birthplace of some of the world's most famous identities – including: actors Audrey Hepburn (born Edda van Heemstra Hepburn-Ruston in Brussels) and Jean-Claude van Damme; artists Jan Van Eyck, Peter Paul Rubens and René Magritte; fashion designers Liz Claiborne and Dries Van Noten; composer and singer Jacques Brel; and writer Georges Simenon with his protagionist Inspector Maigret... www.bellerbyandco.com #Globemakers #Ppco #BelgiumFacts
