Hawaii was originally called the Sandwich Isles. This is what Captain James C. Cook named the islands in 1778 in honor of his patron the Earl of Sandwich. Cook worked on a Yorkshire farm in his youth before winning an apprenticeship with a merchant sailing company at age 17. He cut his teeth as a mariner on shipping voyages in the choppy waters of North and Baltic Seas, and spent the next decade rising through the ranks and mastering the art of navigation. Cook first rose to prominence as a cartographer during the Seven Years’ War, when his detailed charts of the Saint Lawrence River helped the British pull off a surprise attack against French-held Quebec. In the early 1760s, he was given a ship and tasked with charting the island of Newfoundland off the coast of Canada. The map he produced was so accurate that it was still in use in the 20th century. Cook’s skill at charting the seas would later become a crucial tool in his explorer’s arsenal. He won command of his first round-the-world voyage in part because he could be trusted to navigate in uncharted territory and bring home precise maps of the lands he discovered. Cook’s career as an explorer began in August 1768, when he left England on HM Bark Endeavour with nearly 100 crewmen in tow. Their journey was ostensibly a scientific expedition—they were charged with sailing to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus across the face of the sun—but it also had a hidden military agenda. Cook carried sealed orders instructing him to seek out the “Great Southern Continent,” an undiscovered landmass that was believed to lurk somewhere near the bottom of the globe. The explorer followed orders and sailed south to the 40th parallel, but found no evidence of the fabled continent. He then turned west and circled New Zealand, proving it was a pair of islands and not connected to a larger landmass. Cook would later resume his search for the Southern Continent during his second circumnavigation of the globe in the early 1770s, and came tantalisingly close to sighting Antarctica before pack ice forced him to turn back. #GlobeFacts #WorldFacts via History.com. Continuing on with #GlobeFacts winter solstice (click back for more on this). Stonehenge is aligned to the sunset on the winter solstice. The primary axis of the megalithic monument is oriented to the setting sun, while Newgrange, another structure built around the same time as Stonehenge, lines up with the winter solstice sunrise. Some have theorized that the position of the Sun was of religious significance to the people who built Stonehenge, while other theories hold that the monument is constructed along natural features that happen to align with it. The purpose of Stonehenge is still subject to debate, but its importance on the winter solstice continues into the modern era, as thousands of hippies, pagans, and other types of enthusiasts gather there every year to celebrate the occasion. Ancient Romans celebrated reversals at the midwinter festival #Saturnalia. The holiday, which began as a festival to honour the agricultural god Saturn, was held to commemorate the dedication of his temple in 497 BCE. It quickly became a time of widespread revelry and debauchery in which societal roles were overturned, with masters serving their slaves and servants being allowed to insult their masters. Mask-wearing and play-acting were also part of Saturnalia’s reversals, with each household electing a King of Misrule. The first is the fisherman. They are valuable for their seafaring skill and knowledge of the open waters. The second is the ex-militiaman. They previously fought for local warlords and clans. The third is the technical expert who operates equipment such as GPS devices. The closest Somali word for pirate literally translates as "ocean robber" but most of the pirates prefer a term translated as "saviors of the sea". With the use of motherships, the range of pirate skiffs has been extended well into the Indian Ocean. Pirates generally access the ships via ladders that they bring with them. For example, in Switzerland, it forbidden to flush the toilet or let out bath water after 10 in the evening (based on the days when it made a loud gushing sound). Also, the country forbids mowing the lawn and laundering clothes during Sundays. Also in Switzerland.. animals may not be kept by themselves but only with a companion. I.e. adopt your cats in pairs. There has also been a recent push for a law that all animals should have the right to be represented in court by a court appointed attorney. In France, there’s a law that bans people from naming their pet pigs “Napoleon.” And in the United Kingdom, dying in the House of Parliament is illegal. Greece bans all forms of electronic games- not just gambling games- but also harmless ones like online chess, Solitaire, and most mobile games that you play on your phone. It’s an offense in Florence to eat or drink while sitting on church steps or within a church courtyard. The same law applies to eating near public buildings. Snack elsewhere and avoid the fine. The Greeks and indecent behavior don’t mix. If you’re the type of person who gets a laugh out of mooning other folk, you might want to keep your pants up and your belt buckled.
