Gin & It “We wanted it to taste like gin and something you can drink a lot of, not just have one of and move onto something else.” - Kathy Caton, ‘Brighton Gin’. Yes! A gin that doesn’t give you a hangover. We’re listening. Brighton Gin is produced by Helen Chesshire and Kathy Caton in Brighton and Hove's first legal distillery. The distillery runs out of the basement of 'The Urchin' a craft beer pub in Hove co-owned by Nigel Lambe, who also owns Brighton coffee chain, 'Small Batch Coffee Company'. The operation is not only the first of its kind in the city but also one of the few independent distilleries across the entire country. Chesshire previously worked in the wine industry for fifteen years, her grandfather owned ‘Longhurst Brewery’ which was located at Preston Circus. So it’s in the blood then. Now for the scientific part. Brighton Gin is made with 100% British organic wheat spirit which is re-distilled with juniper, fresh orange and lime peel. The coriander seed is locally grown, in fact, it is the first UK commercially grown coriander seed in over two hundred years! Now for the magic part, milk thistle, which is indigenous to the South Downs and renowned for its kindness to the liver function. ‘Brighton Gin’ launched in 2015 and was immediately awarded two silver medals in the ‘2015 International Wine and Spirits Competition for Contemporary Gin and Gin & Tonic’. ‘Brighton Gin’ was also named one of the top ten British Gin’s launched by the Spirits Business. Each bottle is filled by hand and presented in individually waxed bottles featuring the colours of the iconic railings on Brighton's sea front.
