Do you think certain Hogwarts houses tend towards certain wand woods, given the varieties appear to correspond to similar qualities as evaluated by the Sorting Hat?
Weeeerll, I’m really not the person you should ask about this. Over Here they examined how the wand selection worked on Pottermore, but if you mean in universe I don’t know. Certainly some woods might be more common in some houses than others (Red Oak in Gryffindor would make sense, and English Oak in Hufflepuff) but with many it would probably not be nearly so easy to notice any particular links.
You see wands go for the traits which are present in a person, while Sorting happens on the basis of which you most value and which values you align most strongly with. A wand may select someone that may not be expected to suit the wand, just as a Sorting may result in someone going other than they might expect to be Sorted (see Neville Longbottom), but given these are done in different ways there’s no conclusive way to be sure.
You’d be best off asking JKR or analysing Pottermore, than asking me, I’m afraid.
What would an ebony wood and unicorn hair core wand look for in a wix? They seem a contradiction in terms, but that wand definitely exists...
Oh no wand is truly contradictory. The point of the wood is to direct the magic, and the core to channel it, and all trees and creatures are different. Thus, though the overall themes of each may seem opposing, there are gradations which allow for such minglings, and further, people which might require such a mingling, should their directions and magic be at odds.
Anyway. Ebony may be a wood for those with the confidence to be themselves, but that doesn’t necessarily make them aloof, while the simple lack of malice found in Unicorn Hair does not preclude the not infrequent individuality of the Ebony. Simply, such a wand would seek someone with traits most desired by the Ebony, while having no inclination toward malice or cruelty.
