This is one of those unputdownable books for me. One of those books that made me gasp/sigh audibly. One of those books that gave me those blasted butterflies in my stomach that seemed to turn pterodactyl-like in one of those heart-wrenching scenes. I wanted to scream in frustration and shake the person into realization. I was silently yelling at her, ‘Tell him! Tell him!’ I was begging him to see what was happening as it was happening and I wanted their happiness together to begin as soon as possible, anxious for the misunderstandings to be set right, knowing that True Love awaits. I wanted more of their story, after they got their happily ever after. I suppose, there is nothing left to say, except that Ms. MacLean has succeeded.

I’m currently listening to Amanda Foreman’s biography of Georgiana Cavendish to try and get a better handle on the politics/society of the day, and I’ve just got to a direct quote from her teenage daughter Harriet (future Countess Granville)’s letters to her sister about going on holiday with her parents and their girlfriend Bess that was so frank and bitchy that I had to stop and scream a bit. A little googling suggests that at least one volume of her letters is available online, so I guess that’s going on the reading list next.

Best of 2019 - #5 Brazen and the Beast

This book is funny, sexy, and empathetic towards its characters. It does tend towards the melodramatic so readers will have to decide if melodrama is a feature or a bug. The supporting characters are wonderful (or infuriating, depending on which character we are speaking of). The ambience is flawless. It’s also notable that neither Hattie nor Whit are members of the aristocracy. Hattie’s family is rich, but her father is a businessman, after all, and Whit’s background is best referred to as “complicated.” I will re-read this book many times...
