I just bought the Smash Ultimate DLCs and I'm about to discuss how I feel about them.
For reference I usually main Toon Link and Roy when I play. I like fast characters, usually swordfighters, or heavies/brawlers like Incineroar or ROB when I choose to play as a different character. (I like the spinning moves they do)
I ran every test on the Battlefield map and against a Kirby CPU.
- Piranha Plant (Mario Games)
Controls like ROB but remixed to be worse in my opinion. Has a similar spinning move but is it's Up B as opposed to Side B. There is a projectile move that feels similar to Palutena's move that explodes an opponent from a certain distance. Those are the only really notable moves that found a little janky to control but I imagine that they will become easier to use upon practice but I fear I do not feel strongly enough about the Classic Character of Piranha Plant to put in the hours lmao. I will say that Piranha Plant's smash move is really fun and feels like one of those smashes that is practically guaranteed to work every time. 6/10
I was very excited to play Joker because he is one of the only characters I had solid previous knowledge of as I have watched a solid chunk of the Persona 5 anime. I really like how fast he is to play as, his melee attacks work really well for my play style, and his smash is really fun as it showcases the other characters from Persona 5. Also, he has a meter that fills up throughout the game and when its full his Persona fights alongside him, which is really cool! However his ranged attacks don't really work for me personally. 8/10
I LOVE playing as Hero. Genuinely could be a new main on the list tbh. The quick melee attacks work so well with my play style and the bigger more ranged (?) attacks charge quickly and cause lots of damage without slowing down your progress in the match. Hero's smash shows off other Dragon Quest characters and causes massive damage which I am a sucker for (even though I have no clue who any of the characters are haha). Honestly no notes, great experience, love it. 10/10
- Banjo & Kazooie (Banjo & Kazooie)
Controls like a version of Ridley that was made less overpowered. They are a very slow heavy brawler type character which I personally really struggle with when playing but I imagine is lethal under the control of a player who is built for that kind of character. I didn't get to use their final smash in my trial run but found a video of it afterwards to give this a fair review and it looks really cool! Overall, really not for me but I understand why this was such a hyped character in the lead up to Smash Ultimate's release! 4/10
Terry is fast, which I really enjoy! He is a brawler so his move set is something I'm not used to but due to his speed I feel more comfortable getting into the match and familiarising myself with his move set. I think it's really cool that he moves sideways in a way that is very reminiscent to his origins in a fighting series. Again, didn't manage to use his final smash in my test run but looked up a video and his final smash looks incredibly satisfying! 7/10
I have no strong feelings on Byleth. I feel very comfortable with the majority of their move set due to the fact that they are a swordfighter and rely on melee combat. Their up B is really effective at getting opponents off the map. However, they control a bit too slowly for me. I wouldn't be upset if I had to play as them but I wouldn't actively choose to. 5/10
I really struggled adapting to Min Min's move set because it's mostly comprised of ranged moves but once I got used to it, it was very fun to play as! Her smash is great, and shows all the ARMS characters which I really enjoyed. She's not as fast as I would normally go for but it works well as it allows me to get used to what is happening lmao! 6/10
- Steve & Alex (Minecraft)
I fear Steve is broken and overpowered. Steve is so lovely to play as, he's fast and every move is easy to control. He is able to build on the map which feels WAY too powerful. Steve's smash is one of the easiest to get right, and is so fun to watch! I love a lot of the little details when it comes to Steve, such as the Zombie, Enderman, and Alex skins that you can choose to play as. Also, when Kirby adopts Steve's powers, Kirby becomes a cube and it's so cute! Steve is probably one I will play semi-regularly, not a main but a character I dabble in haha! 9/10
- Sephiroth (Final Fantasy)
I like Sephiroth! His moveset is very varied but after a little bit of playing around it's very easy to get used to and get combos with! His smash is also very impressive and fun to watch! Other than that I don't really have any strong feelings! 7/10
- Pyra & Mythra (Xenoblade Chronicles)
Okay so these are two different characters that take up one character slot because you can switch between them midgame, but they control differently so I will talk about them separately!
Pyra - I don't really have strong feelings on Pyra tbh! She controls well and has a solid smash but beyond that I don't see much of a reason to play as her. 7/10
Mythra - she is faster than Pyra which I really enjoy! Her moveset is built for me tbh I love it! She's almost certainly a character that will end up as a main lmao! 10/10
Another OP character I fear, not quite as broken as Steve but still very very powerful! Really easy to control with moves that deal a lot of damage and knockback insanely well! As a great smash! A great character to dip into once in a while. 8/10
I'm a fan of Kingdom Hearts so I was very excited to play as Sora! I love the skin of Sora that looks like a classic Disney animation, I think it's very cute! I really love Sora's moveset, but would like him to play a little faster. I really love the detail that Sora can use fire, ice and electricity powers much like in his home games! His smash is also really cool! I'm really looking forward to playing as Sora more in the future! 9/10
