Smashproof - Ordinary Life
Flashback: Brother - Smashproof feat. Gin Wigmore
11th March 2019.
Ariana Grande is still #1. We’ll flashback ten years to 2009 when the #1 was a homegrown hot, Smashproof’s ‘Brother’
It’s pretty cool that this song made it to #1. It doesn’t happen often for Kiwi bands, even in their home country so Smashproof did really well here. It’s also a great song with a good message and Smashproof cleverly brought in Gin Wigmore who has a great voice to do the chorus. No wonder it was a massive hit here - spending eleven consecutive weeks at the top of the charts, a record for a local band.
Neither Smashproof or Wigmore have ever reached the top of the chart again (in fact Smashproof don’t seem to have made any new music since 2009), but ‘Brother’ has cemented it’s place as a classic NZ song.
It’s particularly noteworthy for shedding light on the realities of living in South Auckland and specifically to a well publicised case where a white man murdered a Maori teenager who was tagging his garage and received only four years jail time (serving only two years).
“Take away a kid’s life just because he tagged. Damn.”
Sad to say not a lot of progress has been made since then despite Smashproof doing their best to shine a light on the issues.
Although the song didn’t really get any traction overseas (it’s possibly too specific to NZ political and socioeconomic issues, although it’s still a banger that I thought would have had more mainstream appeal), it definitely deserves its place on a small, but excellent list of New Zealand artists who’ve had a number one single in New Zealand.

I got some questions in my mind that definitely need some answers right now ‘Cause I gotta know Got all the pieces to the puzzle but cant seem to make it fit so I’m lost, Tell me where to go. But you turned your back and you went away its making me crazy I feel so alone Why did you turn your back Why did you go away ‘Cause you were my brother and you should of stayed
