POTATO BREAD WITH AROMATIC HERBS
As winter draws in, it’s time to get cosy by the fire with some comfort food. I love to ease into the cold weather by making some bread, either in the bread machine or in a regular oven. Our bread machine can be set to begin baking before breakfast, so you wake up to the smell of a fresh loaf in the morning. If I can’t live above a bakery, this has to be the next best thing! The smell of baking bread has to be one of the most wonderful smells around.
Did you know that supermarkets deliberately push the air from the bakery area right through the store? It’s a way to get you to feel hungry. Sometimes the smells are circulated long after the ovens have been turned off. And did you know that instant coffee has extra ingredients to give it that fresh coffee smell? Supermarkets have also been known to pump the smell of bacon, chocolate and fruit through the store: this article from Net Grocer says that the smell of grapefruit distributed by machines caused the sales of fresh produce to rise more than 7%. What’s next: maybe a 3D Smellovision TV?
Now it’s getting colder, there’s no reason not to bake, and kids love doing the hard work. You can knot or plait your dough if you’re cooking in the oven, or add herbs and sun-dried tomatoes to your bread machine mix for a gorgeous orangey-red bread that’s wonderful with spicy soup. Even better, why not cook up a gorgeous apple pie?
