i remember when i took a chemistry class years and years ago i was SO obsessed with the labs where we identified an unknown chemical by testing how it reacted to a known chemical. it gave me deep metaphysical glee.
ah.....to become identifiable to yourself BY the reaction with something else that tears you apart and seems to be the ruin of you, but only in the same way you can identify the chemicals in a material by adding another known chemical to it in order to create the observable chemical reactions to identify what you are trying to identify....
