Had a thought today... what if Salazar acted very similar to Newt Scamander, except only to snake and snake-like creatures. And he only had the Basilisk because it was an awesome snake that would become a giant awesome snake. And like, he built the chamber of secrets not to hunt down Muggle-borns, but because not only did he like giant statues of himself, but he wanted the giant awesome snake to always be able to remember him after he died, while also giving it an awesome place to live.

He didn’t build it to kill muggle-borns, but to protect his pet from people who would seek to harm it, and to protect the school if needed. The reason the Basilisk lived for so long was because it was happy and cared for, even after Salazar’s disappearance.

In the end though, Tom Riddle came and messed it all up. The twat.
