Snake Handler Son Bitten By The Same Snake That Killed His Father

Another case of Church Induced Mental Illness – the son of the late snake handler Pastor has been bitten by a rattlesnake. During the church service Pastor Jamie Coots arm started to swell and he vomited repeatedly, but he survived. Not only did he survive but Jamie says the snakes will be church services tomorrow night. Members of the small congregation in Kentucky say it was the same snake that killed his father a few months back. See Snake

Snake-handling is a tradition for the Coots family of Kentucky. But months after taking over for his father to lead a Pentecostal church, Cody Coots says he was bitten this week. His father, Jamie, died of a poisonous snakebite in February.

The family has been featured on a reality TV show, as reported:

"[Jamie] Coots, known for handling poisonous rattlesnakes and featured on the Snake Salvation, was bitten on his right hand and died in his home after refusing medical treatment, NPR's John Burnett tells our Newscast unit."

Cody Coots, 21, is the pastor of the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name church of Middlesboro, Ky. He tells the that after he was bitten by a rattlesnake Monday, his family sent an ambulance away.

"The painful bite caused swelling and he vomited repeatedly," the newspaper reports.

"For a rattler bite, it wasn't bad at all," Coots said.

He added, "I told the Lord that I wouldn't go to the hospital."

Coots says that snakes will be present at the church's service tonight.

Last year, Coots' father his house and snake room, which included rattlesnakes, copperheads and two cottonmouths.

As John reported:

"Coots has been bitten nine times by venomous snakes. Each time he refused medical attention. Half of his right middle finger is gone as a result of a fang from a yellow rattler. In 1995, a woman who was bit in his church refused to go to the hospital; she died on Coots' couch while church members prayed over her."

Jamie Coots told John that he was speaking to the media in order to dispel misunderstandings about snake-handling in churches.

"We sing, we preach, we testify, take up offerings, pray for the sick, everything like everybody else does," he says. "Just, every once in a while, snakes are handled."

Snake That Killed Pastor Jamie Coots Will Be Back In Church This Week! Who's Next?

The now famous rattlesnake that killed Pastor Jamie Coots, the star of National Geographic Reality Show Snake Salvation will be back in church this week according to his son. Earlier today Cody Coots announced that the snake that killed his father will be back again but he didn’t say who would handle the snake this week.

The family still believes in God's protective power against snake venom,  despite his father's death  he expressed that his dad felt it was much better to die from a snakebite than a stroke or car accident ... in fact, for him a snakebite was "God's way."

Cody Coots will now take over the snake dancing congregation and continue their season on National Geographic.

On Sunday, National Geographic Channels spokeswoman Stephanie Montgomery sent CNN this statement: "In following Pastor Coots for our series Snake Salvation, we were constantly struck by his devout religious convictions despite the health and legal peril he often faced.

"Those risks were always worth it to him and his congregants as a means to demonstrate their unwavering faith. We were honored to be allowed such unique access to Pastor Jamie and his congregation during the course of our show, and give context to his method of worship. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time."

In February 2013, Coots was given one year of probation for crossing into Tennessee with venomous snakes. He was previously arrested in 2008 for keeping 74 snakes in his home, according to National Geographic. Tennessee banned snake handling in 1947 after five people were bitten in churches over two years' time, the channel says on the show site.

"Snake Salvation," a creepy reality show on the National Geographic channel that ran in 2013, lost one of its co-stars.

Jamie Coots, pastor of the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name Church in Middlesboro, Ky., died Saturday night after he refused treatment from a bite earlier in the day by a rattlesnake.

Coots had a strong belief that snakebites would not harm believers as long as they keep their faith. While the practice of handling snakes during services has been illegal for years now, many pastors in the south continue with the practice.

When Coots was bitten, paramedics responded, arriving to the church at 8:30 PM to be told that Coots had denied any treatment.

They left at 9:10 PM and returned an hour later only to find him dead.

His son, Cody Coots, stated that his father had been bitten 8 times before with no reaction and they had expected this bite to be the same.

He said: "We're going to go home, he's going to lay on the couch. He's going to hurt. He's going to pray for a while and he's going to get better. That's what happened every other time, except this time was just so quick and it was crazy.”

Jamie Coots had suffered another snake bite in the past for which he also denied any treatment, instead letting his finger rot and fall off.

Professor Ralph Hood, a good friend of Jamie Coot’s, said of other devotees: “This won’t stop them: just the opposite, they will continue, and praise Jamie Coots as a martyr who died for his faith.”
