Rumi’s demon wavelength spiked, a pulse of raw power flaring. Sylvia’s eyes flickered to the shift, catching it, eyes locked on Rumi's pulsing soul as though she could see beneath her skin.

“Interesting,” Sylvia purred. “You could fight me. You want to.”

She smiled, all teeth. “But it would be such a shame to get all these lovely people involved, wouldn’t it?”

She lifted her glass and took a slow sip, half turning to glance at the crowd behind them – people laughing, drinking, finding small pockets of joy on an ordinary evening, blissfully unaware of how thin the veil was between their comfort and their death.

“So,” Sylvia said, eyes sliding back to Rumi, “little meister… what will you do?”

Rumi’s fingers clenched around her glass.

She swallowed, adrenaline roaring through her veins.

Close-quarter combat without her weapon spelled out sure defeat. Even with Mira at her side, she wasn’t sure she’d stand a chance against someone who could read her wavelength like an open book, while she hadn't felt a single ripple of her opponent's.

Rumi doubted that Sylvia’s restraint had anything to do with protecting the tavern patrons.

The only reason she was still breathing was because Sylvia mistook her reckless choice to come here alone for a display of strength.  

A small, bitter comfort.
