Traversing the Pennines between the northern cities of Manchester and Sheffield, the Snake Pass inspires admiration and trepidation in equal measures. The starting point of the hill pass is slightly east of the town of Glossop, just inside the boundaries of the Peak District. The road remains within the national park for the entirety of the route, adding to its attractiveness as a scenic drive. Many people assume that the Snake Pass took its name in reference to its many twists and turns as it weaves its way through the dramatic landscape. However, while the serpentine route may imitate the animal itself, the real meaning behind the moniker is more prosaic. The road actually acquired its name from the Snake Inn, a popular pub along the route. Interestingly, the situation was later reversed when the Snake Inn renamed itself the Snake Pass Inn, so the pub took its name from the road, which in turn took its name from the pub! 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: There's a bus service run by 'Hulleys of Baslow' that runs from Sheffield to Manchester and vice-versa. The bus line is called SnakeX57, with a single adult fare costing up to £8 and a return £10. ______________________________________ #SnakePass #Pennines #Derbyshire #VisitDerbyshire #DerbyshirePhotographer #Heather #TourOfBritain #NationalGeographic #LonelyPlanet #RoughGuides #England #Britain #GreatBritain #VisitEngland #VisitBritain #Travel_Europe #ScenicLocations #EnglandsBigPicture #OutdoorCulture #AdventureMore #Epic_Captures #UnlimitedParadise #DiscoveryEarth #TravelOn #ExploringTheGlobe #FlashesOfDelight #ArtOfVisuals #TheCreative #TravelPix #RoamThePlanet (at Snake Pass) https://www.instagram.com/p/CIF4V7glaui/?igshid=1gx6bbalms8av
