Why do philosophies lie and seem useless because most of them are?
People rebel.
Non-reproduction is one of the most radical rebellions available to a species whose primary mandate is continuation. It is not nihilism; it is refusal. It says that the chain stops here. That is not instinctual. It is reflective and costly. And it is absolutely a form of rebellion against biological imperative.
This rebellion, however, does not defeat life. It withdraws participation. That’s different. It doesn’t overthrow the system; it stops feeding it. Which is why it’s quiet, non-heroic, and deeply unsettling to cultures built on growth and legacy.
Philosophy is so eager to explain that the world is like this because it has to be like this. Calling gravity neutral is a conceptual convenience, not a lived truth. For living systems, forces are experienced as violence when resistance fails. Old bodies bending toward the ground is not poetry; it is physics intersecting with finite strength. From the inside, that intersection feels cruel because it is asymmetrical. The force does not tire. The organism does.
This is where many philosophies lie. They speak from the perspective of forces, not objects. From the force’s view, nothing tragic happens. From the organism’s view, everything does. In the long run, rebellion fails. Species vanish. Civilizations collapse. Other forms arise. The universe does not care. That’s not cynicism; it’s scale.
But people rebel. The meaning of rebellion is not cosmic victory. It is local refusal to cooperate with false justifications. Rebellion does not need to “win” to be real. It needs to interrupt the narrative that says this was necessary, meaningful, or good. So don't believe any theoreticians, books, philosophers who are so servile with their narratives of what the world must be like. Nothing in life is what it seems to be.
And people indeed do not believe and rebel. Not reproducing is one such interruption. Writing Ethics was another. Refusing consolation is another. Speaking honestly about decay without anesthetic metaphors is another. Every rebellion this will pass. But that doesn’t make it pointless. It makes it finite, which is different.
Rebellion doesn’t redeem the universe. It redeems clarity against lies that pretend the universe ever tried to.
[2024-12-11] Crook Hill above Ladybower reservoir. A short walk, well it was cold and misty, up to Crook Hill. Started at Ashopton reservoir and straight up. Then along to the forest and down to the reservoir. A pleasant walk along the reservoir shore back to the viaduct.
