The Subtle Nature Between Us
While writers are much more visible in the fanfiction space, editors and beta readers are the unsung heroes that often go unnoticed, but who make the reading experience so much more enjoyable. Today, I’m thrilled to share with you the one-on-one I had with Lauriegirl48. Laurie is one of those special editors that doesn’t just clean up your spelling and grammar editors; she can work with you at any point of your creative process. From brainstorming to plotting to rewriting clunky phrases, she does it all, and her true talent is in really being able to understand a writer’s vision and helping them to execute it. Without further ado, here’s our interview!
How long have you been a member of P&P? Just over a year!
How did you find P&P? Through Ao3. I’ve been seeing the collections and challenges for years, but never knew how to join.
How long have you been a Snamione fan? 15+ years? I try not to think about it too hard…
What got you into the pairing? I am also a Dramione fan and have been for close to 20 years. I believe I followed a Dramione author into Snamione (a good author can convince me to go almost anywhere :)) and I got hooked!
How did you become a fanfic editor? I beta for two fandoms – Harry Potter and Wednesday (Netflix). I was part of a Wednesday server and an author was looking for a beta, so I volunteered! It’s been something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time and could never figure out how to get into it. I then realised that fandom servers often have a beta-reader role, so I picked that and jumped at the chance to help people when they asked. Eventually, I started to get comfortable approaching other authors.
What do you most enjoy about editing fics? I love fixing errors and brainstorming with authors about ideas and characterisations. What is hardest about editing fics? Beta-ing chapter by chapter can be difficult. I don’t always remember what’s happened in previous chapters (depending on the story itself and how long it’s been since the last one) and so keeping a fic’s lore straight can be difficult. It also interrupts the flow to not receive a large chunk at once, and if an author doesn’t know where they want to take a story yet (which is incredibly common, and is not a judgement from me), it can make brainstorming and appropriate editing difficult because you can’t see the picture as a whole yet.
What advice do you have for new writers seeking a beta editor? Be clear about what kind of corrections and feedback you want and be prepared to get it.
Do you think everyone needs a beta editor? Not at all! I work with an author who honestly doesn’t need me. She writes her entire fic (often novel length) and lets it marinate for a few weeks before she even sends it to me. But she likes the reassurance and sanity check, and I love working with her.

How many projects do you juggle at the same time? Between the two fandoms, I think I have about 10-14 authors that I work with at any given time. They all work at different frequencies. Some I hear from every day or two for brainstorming purposes, some I don’t hear from for months at a time. I’d say I’m usually beta-ing 2-5 chapters from different authors every week.
What does a normal editing session look like? This depends on the work (how long it is, subject matter, triggers, etc.), but typically I’ll read through a chapter once, maybe twice when it’s sent to me and I make changes as I go. If something doesn’t land right to me, I make note and will often go back to double check. If the program allows me to, I try to live react to things as I read to break up the corrections.
How much time does it take you to edit a chapter? (Let’s say 3000 words). It depends on the chapter and what it needs, and therefore changes depending on an author’s familiarity with English grammar rules, how focused they were on writing, and how much editing they did themselves. But usually, 30-45 minutes?
Does it bother you when an author gives you a fic to edit and it has a bunch of typos and errors? NO!!!!!!! I get this comment from authors all the time and it drives me crazy. It is literally my job to help you fix typos and errors. I want to fix them. Your fic with a bunch of typos and errors is “my precious” and helping to polish your work brings me joy, so let me do it.
Hello Folks! The Potions & Parchment 2026 Fanon Characteristics Surveys have arrived. This time we are doing one for Severus AND one for Hermione.
Fill them both in to represent where you stand on some current fanon traits and characteristics.
Surveys will be open for a week and are going out to a number of places to capture as broad a relevant cross section of people as possible.
I'll compile the data and present it shortly thereafter. We're keen to have you participate.

Hidden gems #1 - I Need No Shackles to Remind Me By Hrair Rating: Teen & up. No Warnings Used. From the Death Eater Fest 2022 Collection. Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/39760149
Hidden Gems is a series devoted to showcasing fics that are lesser-known, deserve more love, or (according to me) are criminally underrated. Today’s work is I Need No Shackles to Remind Me by Hrair (published in 2022). Clocking in at 353 kudos and 2,909 hits, this fic has received some love, but in my opinion not nearly enough for such a heartbreakingly beautiful, deeply thoughtful and provoking work. This unique fic is mostly an epistolary story (written in letters). Getting to watch the love between Hermione and Severus quietly blossom through the back and forth of their correspondence is what makes it magical. Let’s jump right in, shall we? Rereading this fic, the first thing that I am struck by is the prose. It makes me feel things right away, and I am dragged into the story. This is a tale about Severus being forced to confront his own demons. He can’t hide behind his Occlumency in Azkaban, and as such, he is thrown into the depths of his own grief. In a way, he grieves truly for the first time. It HURTS TO READ, man. This is really angsty work. I love that Hrair doesn’t flinch away from the ugly parts of Severus. She really doesn’t glamorize him or absolve him of his own sins. She pulls back the curtain on just how truly, pitifully, broken he is, and it makes the fic hit that much harder. “Severus suspected that today might be his birthday.” - I physically felt my heart ripped out of my body with this line. Aaaaaand it only gets worse, because we walk with him as he is treated badly by guards, stared at by other prisoners, and not even given the time or dignity to wash properly. It makes me feel angry on his behalf. To see him suffer so much after he already gave everything makes my Snape loving-heart rebel and cry out. Finally, a break in the monotony of prison with a letter from Hermione! WAIT SEVERUS DON’T CRUMPLE IT UP! ugh. I’ve read this fic so many times but I still forgot he did that. He really is so stubborn sometimes. Good thing Hermione is stubborn too. Oh good, he wrote back. All right, I won’t spoil any more of the plot for you than I already have, but let’s just say this is one of those rare ones that actually, really, in real life, made me tear up. Things develop achingly slowly and the romance is very understated, but in a way that feels believable and authentic to the characters. You’ll love it, I promise. You might also hate me for making you read something so soul-crushingly sad (until the happy ending!), but you still won’t be able to get it out of your head for days afterward. It will stick with you, as it has with me. And that’s what makes it a hidden gem. If you read this fic, please show the author some love by leaving comments and Kudos!
Somewhere in the Silence by applesandasphodel
I've expanded the plot line (again 😅) and updated the chapter count from ten to twenty. Eight chapters now posted. Fast physical burn, slow emotional burn, and a whole lot of angst to go around.
Excerpt from this weeks chapter:
Realizing this may be the last time he saw her like this—the last time they may ever be alone, truly alone, again—Severus was struck with a foolish, reckless idea. At best, it would break at least six protocols. At worst—
“Would you like to have dinner with me tonight?”
Hermione looked up sharply from her ink-laden parchment, confusion still etched into her features.
Obviously. They had dinner together every night.
“In the village,” he added, clarifying. Behind her eyes, he could practically see the gears of her mind whirring, shifting from potions to… whatever he was doing. “To—” Severus fumbled over his words uncharacteristically, then sucked his teeth and readjusted “—celebrate.”
Bloody fuck, what was wrong with him?
Weekly weekend updates :)
Snamione: Snape is being tested
I image this scene happening during the war. Some Death Eaters saw Severus together with Hermione and start wondering on which side he fights. To find out his true loyalty the Dark Lord has ordered to kill Hermione and forced Severus to carry her dead body.
According to his reaction, they want to find out if he has feelings for Hermione or if he doesn't care about her. He tries his best to hold back his tears, his pain, frustration, sadness...but in the end his Occlumency is too weak...

Snamione Fic Recs - Part 3
It's been a while, but I have another batch of SS/HG fic recs for y'all. As always, please leave comments and kudos for the authors if you enjoy them!
And She Would Darken the Memory by Cheam_Creems (post-hogwarts, Gothic Horror, E, 115k)
Summary: Hermione Granger wakes from an eight-year coma and finds a world where trust can't be found. Her friends speak in riddles and hide details. Her medical team cannot find the source of her ailment and present galling treatments. And her most reliable asset, her own mind, contradicts and misleads her. And somewhere, deep below, under the foundations of rock, the layers of memory and uncertainty, a voice calls to her.
Why I loved it: Featuring Cheam_Creem's incredible writing, it's a true masterclass on how to write an unreliable narrator. All the characters are complex and engaging, but never trustworthy. It's creepy, dark, and the mystery around Hermione’s hallucinations and her treatments is so compelling. Highly recommended!
A Three-Day Festival of Self-Regard by PumpkinDoodles (post-hogwarts, Romance/Humour, M, 3.4k)
Summary: When she’s invited to Ron’s multi-day destination wedding to Pansy Parkinson, Hermione doesn’t expect to spend all her time trapped with her cantankerous former professor. Much less debating the appeal of relationships and intimacy.
Why I loved it: The banter! That is basically the majority of this fic, and it's so good: witty, sarcastic, insightful, and very in-character.
At the Beach by chivalric (epilogue compliant slow burn, Romance/Drama, E, 48k) (Note: not on AO3)
Summary: Ten years after the war, a man takes a stroll along the beach and meets someone from his past.
Why I loved it: I found a decade-old list of fave fics and this one stood out among the handful I reread. Unhappily married, Hermione takes Rose and Hugo on a beach holiday, where she meets Severus--except both are hiding their identities and unaware of who each other really are. As a holiday fling becomes something more, they have to deal not only with whether to reveal their true selves but Hermione's infidelity (and the complications don't end there!). I really enjoy stories with juicy emotions because people are doing things they know are wrong, and this delivers.
Daddy's Money by KittiePie11 (pureblood/Gringott's inheritance test AU, Romance, E, 30k)
Summary: When a trip to Gringotts reveals that Severus is now eligible to inherit the Prince estate, Lucius is filled with delight at the prospect of helping him find a suitable wife to fulfill the succession conditions. Severus is considerably less enthusiastic. Unfortunately for him, a surprising number of witches are interested in becoming Lady Prince. Most are after his new fortune. A few appear to be plotting his early demise. And one particularly insufferable witch cannot resist his newly acquired library.
Why I loved it: We've already established I love good banter, but I also love when Hermione's pettiness is allowed to shine, and this has both in spades. The romance development and light D/s with a submissive Severus feel natural and I adored the clever use of “Daddy”. It's fun, it's funny, it's hot—nothing not to love here!
