I finished up the outfit for the Snap Star doll and am pretty dang pleased with it.

Snap Star doll line by Yulu Toys

Character: Dawn

The raccoon eyes spoke to me. Words cannot describe how unhinged she looked in box. All the promo art I’m finding has made sure that you can’t see her eyes properly. Apparently all the dolls look Like That. Poor Dawn was the only one left on the shelf.

But seriously, has anyone else taken a look at these dolls? The premise is pretty cute and would be a lot of fun for any kids interested in photography and editing. I wasn’t too impressed with the quality of the clothing. The shorts and jacket were plastic tarp material and the shirt was cheap fake satin. For a doll that is supposedly interested in fashion, I found the outfit lacking compared to the others of the line. She kind of looks like she’s on the way to a funeral.

A few other things pointed towards a lack of quality in the manufacturing department. Her cell phone’s sticker came off immediately upon opening the box. The purse had no-gos (aka hangy offy bits) from the mold. The shoes bothered me the most since they painted only two of the four rivets:

C’mon. They’re molded as rivets.

The character art is adorable though, and I wish they had been better able to translate it into a doll:

I was impressed, however, with the articulation. Not only does she have full joint articulation, but her hips can move 90 degrees outward, and her ankles are articulated to allow for flat shoes as well as heels. The heads are a little strange, though the mold is cute after you remove the raccoon eye liner. The irises are just way too small for the eyes so they all look shocked. The lining inside is also very thick, so I had to make what was essentially new eye holes.

The proportions are... weird with the head. It’s very, very large. Arms are short, legs are long. Honestly, I’m going to be keeping an eye out to see if Yulu Toys comes out with any more doll lines. From what I see, they specialize more in the “board game”/”game toy” type arena. A lot of their games look like educational fun.

I’m looking forward to making this girl some new clothes and giving her a new face. I’m using the factory clothing as the patterns for the outfit to keep with the original vibe of the doll as best as I can.

Saw this new doll in walmart today and was kinda surprised. . . the art is so cute but GIRL, who did that to your face?!

I was delighted to find how articulate she was when I opened her up. The joints are all sturdy and hold poses well. And the removable wig is fantastic! Very soft. As for her head, it feels like a very thick rubbery plastic. Its hard and doesnt moosh no matter how hard I squeeze. I would guess because these dolls do not have rooted hair.

The stand is adjustable and seems to work alright. You have to make sure to push the peg into the neck all the way or she falls off. A stand like this has its pros and cons, but so far I like the idea.

I want to see about swapping in a head from a different doll, but Im uncertain about what kind of neck peg she has. I think it might be a ball on top? If head swapping isnt an option, I’ll do my best to repaint the one she has... lol
