Tommy stood there like a beefy Disney prince, a sparkle of knowing amusement in his eyes, to which Buck silently responded by pinching his brows together and frowning—confused and curious about what Tommy seemed to know that he didn’t. “Well, if it’s okay with you,” Tommy said, “I think I’ll stick with Evan—I got a feeling he’s gonna be worth getting to know.”   And getting to know each other was something they very much did. xXx He’d spent so long thinking it mattered—always somewhere in his mind, the worry that a part of him was a lie—not sure of his own name—but now he got it. He did. Because when he’d left Pennsylvania, he’d done it feeling like a failure at being the Evan his parents had wanted for a son—and then years later, after learning of Daniel, the curse of his name only felt worse. And he’d expected it to stay that way—despite the copious amount of therapy he endured—though in his defense, he never knew that someone like Tommy had been waiting in his future—ready to say his name a million different ways until he learned to love the sound of it again.

Buck groaned, palms pressed against the shower wall, the spray hitting the back of his head as he bowed his neck, allowing him to stare at the chrome temperature adjust. Water streamed off his cheekbones, nose, and chin. He spit out the water that continued to try and drown him. “Just stop—stop it, okay?” The words were kitten-weak—and despite the protest they contained, he didn’t move away from the hands sliding along his spine, the calloused thumbs that were forcing the fibers of his muscles to relax in a way they hadn’t in days. “Evan.” The tone was flatter than the corn fields in Iowa, and it felt antagonizing, though only because it felt like letting go—letting go of the guilt and moving on. Inevitable but necessary—and he didn’t think he was ready. Sometimes, people just died—calls went wrong—but punishing himself felt right—hiding in the hurt seemed like his penance for failing—and that was more bearable than the pain of acceptance and the peace forgiving himself would bring. “Why won’t you just stop?” “Because you deserve to feel good—because you’re doing that thing where you feel guilty about being taken care of—and because stop it isn’t your safeword”

Not gonna happen—at least anytime soon. And especially when I think you’re full of shit.” He pressed his forehead into the crook of Tommy’s neck, fingers like claws in the man’s shirt, refusing to let go. If anything, he got closer—clung harder—not allowing Tommy to leave even if he tried.

xXx An exploration of what it means to love, including the fear that comes with allowing those ugly bits of yourself to seen for the first time and learning to overcome it. A story of snotty tears and broken bones, handholding and lashing out. A story of two people, who might be just be a little bit broken, but somehow use that to prove exactly what the power of love can do Buck struggles with the death of a teen on a call, and instead of going home and allowing his pain to be a punishment for his failure, he has Tommy hovering like a mother hen. Buck dissociates into what he refers to as his mental soup, and he lashes out and tries to push Tommy away, rather than allow himself comfort

Drool spilled down his chin as he coughed and gagged a bit, tears coming to his eyes, though he kept Tommy in his mouth, not backing off. Though, it seemed Tommy had some opinions on that, as suddenly he was using Buck’s hair to pull him back, trying to get his attention. “Easy, kid—Christ, you don’t do things by halves, do ya? Fuck, baby, just take it slow—let yourself get used to it before trying to deep-throat me, alright?” Buck huffed, sucking his tip like a lollipop before popping off just to look up at him through wet lashes, as his already slightly raspy voice teased, “Thought you wanted to see me cry?”

After Tommy's little comment about him having a daddy kink during dinner, Buck finds himself intrigued. One thing leads to another, and then Buck's on his knees in the kitchen, dirty dishes forgotten.

Some introspection and determination to step past insecurities get the job done—that and having Tommy as a boyfriend who knows exactly what he needs.

Oh, and Buck is an idiot who should know better than to kneel on a hard floor, especially with a leg that a ladder truck had once gotten too up close and personal with—but it’s okay because Tommy’s got him there, too.

But, then, uh, after the lightning strike—the coma—it became more about having proof I existed, and it started to become a thing.” The poignant tragedy of the whole fucking situation ached under his sternum, the burning frustration and anger at the unfairness that someone as good as Evan had gotten saddled with a shit hand like this—and that was when it really clicked for him. Whether it was carrying some of the weight or simply being a safe harbor in the storm, he wanted to be that for Evan, for as long as he’d allow.

Coffee and conversation after a rough night’s sleep for Buck leads to a memory box opened and declarations made. Nobody cries, but they do laugh—they’re in love, your honor

do I have 2.2k of a buck/tommy hurt/comfort thing already written where buck needs to cancel their plans cuz of a migraine and tries to hide that from tommy only for tommy to suspect something then come and dote on him sweetly? well if you know me then you know the answer to that

Tommy cleared his throat. “Again with the tension. You know we don’t need to do anything, right? I get that this can be a lot, and the last thing I want is to be that guy, ya know?”

He rubbed the back of his neck, wincing at the awkwardness, then glanced up, one eye squinted shut like it would make it easier to meet his gaze. “That guy?”

There was a worried-looking wrinkle between Tommy’s brows and a pinch to his mouth, as he seemed to study Buck. “The one you end up regretting ‘cos you were worried about doing shit you weren’t ready for yet.”

Yet.

That was a word. Three letters and full of promise for a future. One that he still couldn’t believe had been right in front of him the whole time—except perhaps he’d needed the time to grow towards it. Because even months ago, he might not have been the version of himself that’d had been ready for this step—he’d still been cooking—but now? Yeah, that kiss had broken him free.

A few tight nods, then he dropped the hand from his neck. “Yeah—uh, definitely—no regrets.” His throat felt swollen as he tried to swallow, eyes raking over the bulk of Tommy’s chest—the bulk of muscle that triggered a mixture of emotions.

“Tell you what, how about we stick a pin in things for the night—hey, don’t make that face,” Tommy said, the corner of his mouth quirking up as he caught Buck’s chin with two fingers and made him meet his gaze. “Because I’m definitely not done with you, alright? I just want to take things slow—you deserve to be treated right.”

Summary:

He and Chimney both gripped the remote, continuing to sing off-key, “It’s strong and it’s sudden…”

Ducking some flying popcorn, Chimney laughed into the next line as Buck picked a piece from where it got stuck in his shirt, eating it with a cheesy smile. “And it’s cruel sometimes, but it might just save your life.”

Then, taking the remote from Chimney, Buck grinned, winking at Tommy as the man watched from Eddie’s phone before singing in the most over-the-top fashion possible, “That’s the power of love.”

Not even an hour ago, he’d been carefree, singing that stupid fucking song, totally naïve to the dare that moment of joy had issued to the universe—and just how the fates would reply.

And now, an eternity was trapped in a fading scream that played on repeat in Buck’s mind. His skull buzzed and vibrated against the silence-eating echo of the sound—as it began to morph and change—becoming an almost painful throb. A heartbeat.

Blinking, he squeezed his eyes shut, only to be greeted by fingerlike shadows reaching inward from the edges of his vision when he reopened them, tightening the already thin beam of his headlight.

“Buckley—answer me, dammit,” a voice that sounded a lot like Bobby crackled over the radio.

i'm trying so hard to make it through the 15k of first draft in which i delete a bunch of purple prose and add a shit ton of poetic puke back in its place again, i am about halfway, and stopping for a sec to breathe again, as i'm currently mourning my left earbud since it somehow didn't get charged correctly and now i can't block out the chaos of my house which for most people would be quiet at 1am but apparently we are all weird fucks that stay up until 4am everyday

but venting about my sad aside, here is the last paragraph that i did a minute ago on first edit run (which for me is not typo or grammar related but just the feels of the sentences instead)

A groaned hum of appreciation vibrated low in his throat as Tommy somehow knew exactly where to press. This bit of gentleness wasn’t so bad, different than pain in how it softened the edges of things both inside and out, but still too unproven to entrust as its replacement.
