The Snow Queen❄️

My illustration of The Snow Queen fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen for "The Shadow Chronicles" art book, a charity project created to gather funds to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine. As always, I hesitate before posting non fan art works here, though I guess this can be considered fan art of a very old fairy tale? Or rather my own interpretation of the classic characters. It is quite disheartening when these don't get many views and interactions, but that's the reality of social media. Since I am new here, I have to rely on fan art to gain a following, but then I don't have the time to work on any fan art because of the electricity blackouts we're experiencing again because of russia constantly bombing our energy infrastructure. But as long as I have access to the internet, I will share my art, because we are still here and we shall remain.

The little robber-girl was about the same size as Gerda, but stronger; she had broader shoulders and a darker skin; her eyes were quite black, and she had a mournful look. She looked earnestly at Gerda, and said, —

“They shall not kill you, even if I do get angry with you; for I will do it myself.”

"The Snow Queen" (Danish: Snedronningen), fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, was first published 21 December 1844 in "New Fairy Tales. First Volume. Second Collection", 180 years ago.

I wanted to commemorate its anniversary by drawing my favorite character from the story, and one of my favorite fictional characters of all time, The Little Robber Girl, as she appears in 1957 Soviet animated adaptation by director Lev Atamanov. Design of the character belongs to artist Alexander Vinokurov.

This character, with her short appearance in the movie, had impact on me back in childhood: she’s feisty, violent, and self-serving, and has grown up among the people with no moral conduct, but she’s able to recognize love and courage, and be magnanimous and caring. And in the movie, she’s got a convincing arc from antagonist to ally in just about few minutes of screentime.

One person once observed that I seem to like “dark characters with warm hearts”, it may be accurate in that regard.

as a kid, my favorite fairytale was the Snow Queen, so naturally when Frozen came out I loved it (not as much now as obviously the market is oversaturated with it lmao) but I also was sad we missed out on a proper Disney Villain Snow Queen character more true to the character in the og story- so I’ve always loved the early concepts of Elsa, specifically the fluffier design by Harald Siepermann. Here’s the two designs in my style!

Art of  Snedronningen The Ice Witch. A Gentry for a Changeling: The Lost game. 

Snedronningen appears as a statuesque fair skinned woman of Scandinavian decent. She has angular features and skin and lips the colour of a person out in the cold to long. Her eyes are shards of a broken mirror, and there is blood and tiers frozen on her face. She wore a tall crown of ice, and regal dress made of ice and frozen honey. She kept the hive for the bees in her dress, and they buzzing was the sound of winter wind and chimes. She would come out in winter looking for her lost children through the reflections in ice. If she found a suitable child, (one of her descendants) she would pull them through the ice and take them to her palace in the lands of permafrost. She take their names and store them in jewelry made from frozen honey. She love and adore them, until they could no longer take the cold. Fearful they would die, she would turn them into ice and snow, and forget about them like the rest of her children. They then became servants of the Queen of the Snowflakes. Some would serve in her court, act as servants and guards, or search for more of her lost children. Snedronningen is the keeper of Toby. She is my version of Snedronningen from "The Snow Queen" by Hans Christian Andersen
