I love being captivated by D&D (Doomed and Dysfunctional) siblings
After much deliberation I have decided to compile a list of all the reasons why Bolaire reminds me of JJ
Arguably the most knowledgeable people in their respective parties
Sorta-similar voices? (for context: JJ sounds kinda like Bolaire but slightly higher-pitched)
Inexplicable disconnections between emotions and body language (Bolaire’s panic-laughing and JJ’s lack of expressions)
Also just in general the weird contrast of JJ almost never expressing anything despite having no reason not to whereas Bolaire is FRIGHTENINGLY expressive for a guy who. Yknow. Wears a clay mask 24/7
A little too honest for their own good, but perceptive enough that it’s not really a problem
Very polite and very nice yet somehow also very chaotic
Both Chaotic Good? Probably?
Have soft spots for children
Unspoken yet deep hatred for their appearances (we technically don’t know this for sure in Bolaire’s case but I’d be surprised if he didn’t secretly despise the mask)
oh GOD I’m still spending too much time thinking about how jj and bolaire would vibe if they ever met
Now I’m realising part of the reason why I like Bolaire so much is because he feels like a character Letter would make
jj and ricky give me sebastian and painter vibes but like. in a weird way. just for the record
Fairies deserve to start acting a bit more buglike. As a treat
ah yes ._. and his brother >:(
Sense you asked for questions.
What are some of your favorite jj and ricky quotes?
JJ
Okay starting off the list probably “I’m lucky” as he was explaining his (made-up) backstory to the rest of the party. Because that’s, without a doubt, the first big lie he tells in the campaign (other than “my name is Rickett” and “I was made by fairies to replace a child they kidnapped”). Like bro you are NOT lucky wtf are you talking about 😭
(Also now is a good time to address this: when I say “Rickett”, I mean JJ’s fake name from Sessions 1-8 when he was possessing a wooden doll to try and hide the fact that he’s dead.)
“I was taught how to torture people in one of the worlds I went to. It’s surprisingly useful.”
Rickett listing all the reasons why Durst Manor is 100% a haunted house and specifically noting the “creepy children on the road”. you hypocritical little shit
Rickett calling himself a “snarky piece of shit”. do I need to explain why
I mean I don’t think I can list any one quote in particular from the scene where his lie is revealed… but in general just the fact that there is an AUDIBLE difference between JJ’s real voice and the voice he puts on as Rickett. It’s kinda subtle but Rickett sounds a bit more like… kinda like the album version of Karnak from RTC yknow?
“I haven’t been in this form for 300 fucking years!” (For multiple reasons: 1. This is the first time the voice changer is used, 2. The fact that you can actually HEAR the sadistic glee in his voice as he knows for a fact just how fucked Strahd and his consorts are now that they’ve really crossed the line, and 3. The fact that you can hear the reactions from the other players as they see the absolute banger design that is JJ for the first time)
“Who do you want to be”. THE JJ quote.
“I stabbed a Night Hag :)”
The scene where the Bestial form shows up for the first time and he calls himself a monster to the rest of the party? In that enraged and resigned fucking voice, that tone that makes you just know he thinks he’s only pointing out the obvious, an issue that, in reality, nobody else seems to care about that he’s being hyperaware of for understandable but ultimately irrelevant reasons? Peak. Fucking peak.
The entire scene where he’s reprimanding Ricky for his brutal (accidental) murder of Arabelle because you can tell just from the tone of his voice that he understands Ricky’s even more affected by it than he is. That he doesn’t need to continue scolding him for it. But still, he does, because he knows how stubborn he is and that he needs to drive home the point as much as possible to make sure he listens this time.
Oh and one SPECIFIC line from that scene that I somehow forgot when writing this: “You may not be able to say it yourself, but I can see that even you are broken by this.”
The entire scene where he’s describing his thoughts on Ricky to Cedrot because that just drives home the fact that he doesn’t really blame him for what he did. Like he knows Ricky’s actions are more trauma responses than they are anything else- hell, Ricky’s whole existence is a trauma response
Uhhh nothing in particular from the flashbacks, surprisingly… well actually, JJ having the balls to call the Queen of the Fey a bitch in her native language, and knowingly within earshot of her. This audacity of this lil shit (though considering that she basically just confessed to killing his mom this is actually a surprisingly tame reaction in context)
Also just the entire scene where he’s roasting Mental Cadranta just before he finishes her off for good like why tf is this kid so good at roasting
“Ricky would rather stab first and ask questions later.” Because yes, JJ. Yes he would.
Skipping ahead awhile since Sessions 22-28 are exclusively ones where Ricky’s fronting, his tone of voice when he says “I’ve made a deal with some devils”. Specifically because his tone of voice tells you he knows exactly how this sounds without context… and yet he still chooses to only tell them the context immediately after he says that. (Hell, not only after he says that but after he says “hear me out” as well. Like bitch they are not going to hear you out if you say that without context 😭)
The scene where he sees the giant elk for the first time because. I’m sorry that scene is so unserious what do you mean this is like some of the most emotion we’ve ever heard in JJ’s voice and THAT’s the context for it
There are more but I think I should move on to Ricky now
Ricky
“You’ve all been hurting my little brother”. His first line. The start of a legacy people
Also that entire fight scene in general, because his tone lets you know pretty obviously how pissed he is, but he also sounds so… nonchalant? Like this is just a regular Tuesday for him? Which, considering how many people he’s implied to have killed for the sake of “protecting” his little brother, it probably is?
Him describing JJ’s eyes as “like the morning sun.” he loves his brother so fucking much he just doesn’t want to show it in any way that doesn’t involve brutal murder
“Why are you making him cry if you want him to trust you.” Bitch all they did was comfort him about his insecurities and reassure him that they don’t see him as any lesser than them due to the fact that he’s dead. Motherfucker are you THIS dense
Also when he’s requesting that the Flametongue dagger be put on Erag’s grave on JJ’s behalf. Specifically because, if I remember correctly, this is the only scene pre-Ritual of the Moon where he refers to JJ by his nickname and not as James. awwwwww :)
“I’m gonna kill you for this” in the flashback to when they’re being mauled by the Displacer Beast, for multiple reasons: Firstly, the rage. The RAAAAGE in that fucking voice is something that cannot be outmatched. Secondly… okay I just find the fact that these were literally his first words extremely funny. Lil bro was just born and he’s immediately pissed
And the scene during the Ritual of the Moon where he asks JJ if he’s the source of all of their problems. Now that he’s been faced with his problems, not only does he take responsibility for everything he’s done, he takes responsibility for ALL of their problems, even the ones that have nothing to do with him. That just proves how loyal he is.
Skipping ahead a bit, the beginning of the Shard of the Shadowfell arc and the sheer fear in his voice when he realises that one of them might disappear if the Shard brings them back to life completely. (Even when that plot point was retconned immediately afterwards because the next time we see Ricky in Session 23 he’s been brought back to life completely and JJ is perfectly fine)
Which brings us to, quite possibly, my favourite Ricky scene in the entire campaign: his conversation with JJ in Session 23. Simply because you can hear the fear and anxiety in his voice so obviously, and it makes him sound almost like a completely different person (and not just because of the absence of the voice changer), which just goes to show how foreign of an emotion fear is to him!
And also the scene where he fails to compute how Aster can have a fear of ghosts but be completely fine around him. Specifically the part where he calls himself a “very efficient killer”. Like bitch you just realised a week ago that at least 60% of your kills were actually innocent people and you still take so much pride in what you do?!
Also also the other scene he has with Aster where he’s comforting him about Erag’s death while also simultaneously trying to calm him the fuck down because he knows full well what too much anger does to people. Topped off by the fact that he also smiles at the end because like YEAHHHH WOOOOOOOOO 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 SMILE LITTLE DUDE :DDDDDD
“I AM LITERALLY OLDER THAN YOU SIT DOWN” (still can’t believe they let him participate in a drinking competition. wtf do you mean you’re going to let, not only a 15-year old, but THIS 15-year old drink)
Yet again, there are more, but I’ve been writing this for two fucking hours and I think I should just move on. thanks for the ask :)
