This is the kitchen-table-sized, solid, cast-iron, floor-standing Schimanek guillotine machine in the @national_library_of_australia conservation studio. It’s surrounded by clever, deft, patient people preserving photos, coddling costumes, and using teensy brushes to paint on flour solutions to mend rips on fragile pieces of paper. When you lean down on the handle and the blade cuts a perfectly straight, long slice off a length of cardboard or paper, it makes the most satisfying, sharp, snickery sound. It looks and feels like Serious Engineering and is a delightful shade of creamy olive green. Honesty doesn't equal brutality and insensitivity. To be honest you have to be sincere. You have to understand the actual truth. Otherwise you're just as delusional as the person you think you're being frank with.

Honesty a lot of the times means pointing out what is important, but not obvious. At least not to other people. Honesty means being sincere in that you are trying to help the person you're talking to see their life in a clearer light, not trying to put them down just for having their own feelings and opinions.

This is where Greg (or "James") doesn't get it.
