"Daddy's Gonna Buy You A Mockingbird..." Heres that Sniper Dad fluff I had promised teehee:
Sebastian really didn't understand what it meant to be a father. He didn't have a good example of one, and never paid attention to how his friends' fathers acted when he was growing up. So whenever he became a father, he was fucking terrified.
But it also clicked everything into place. He was protective of the people he loved, always was, but with this little girl...god. He'd burn the whole city to dust for her.
The way her hands curled against his jacket in the cold, her head resting against his shoulder. Still asleep but awake enough to know she was safe. He could've cried from the look of peace on her face. Setting her down in her bed, tucking the blankets around her, those little hands still holding onto his jacket. He could've cried from the sight. Giving a goodnight kiss on the forehead, seeing her smile more as she got comfortable in bed.
Sebastian wondered if she knew he had no idea what he was doing. But then he realized that no parent knew what to do, when it was their first kid. Nothing prepared you for raising another human being. Sure, there was taking after the way you were raised but that didn't really work when you were raised by someone shitty.
Being a father was terrifying enough without a job where he could get arrested. To say he was stressed was an understatement. But he was good at what he did so he wasn't going to get caught. And he refused to let work get in the way of being a parent. He wasn't just the father, he was the only parent she had now.
He was doing his best. And seeing her smile made everything worth it. Seeing her eyes lit up whenever he came home, feeling her hug him as tight as she could...it was better than gold. He wouldn't trade this for anything.
Sebastian really didn't understand the lullaby he'd sometimes sing to her; "hush little baby, don't say a word / Daddy's gonna buy you a mocking bird / And if that mockingbird don't sing / Daddy's gonna buy you a diamond ring". He'd heard Severin hum it to him once before but just...never understood it.
Now he did. There was probably some bigger meaning to the lullaby that was depressing but to him...it was just what the promise of fatherhood was. Wanting the best, and not stopping until the best was found. That wasn't just about material possessions either; he was still thinking of moving apartments, or even getting a place in the countryside just so she could have a backyard. He didn't have a damn clue how to cook but was learning because TV dinners and takeout wasn't a good diet for either of them.
This little girl was an angel, and he'd send the whole country to damnation if she asked him.
