Her heart was beating faster, her breathing shallow as she stood outside. She didn’t know why she was scared of this, Sebastian would have no reason to be angry with her. And yet she still felt like a disappointment to him. Alex knew that it made no sense to feel this way; training harder or learning more with her dad wouldn’t have changed the situation. And yet after her first tour, she had run away from her unit and not looked back. Three months hiding in Paris to pull herself back together had been a way of avoiding returning home to face him, to prolong telling Sebastian he was right. That she should never had enlisted, that doing the right thing sometimes took twice as much strength as working on the wrong side of the law. Biting her lip and raising her hand to knock gently, she wondered if it was too late to back out of this now and just flee before she was noticed.
