Someone who cares

Summary: Levi's girlfriend tries to help him get through his bladder problems.
Mild angst warning.
"Levi?" I knocked on his door softly. It had been a while since I had last heard him move around which meant he was either asleep or purposefully avoiding me.
I sighed, debating on whether to open up the door or come back later when he was in a better mood.
The day started out fine. We woke up and decided to go to the market together which is something we often do in our spare time. Everything was going fine until Levi suddenly needed the bathroom out of nowhere.
I tried my best to help wheel him to the bathroom on time but by the time we got there, he couldn't hold it anymore and ended up wetting himself before we were anywhere near a bathroom. It wasn't the first time this had happened.
I was confident no one noticed it but that didn't keep him from being so humiliated about it that he refused to look at me for the rest of the day. Any time I tried talking to him, he would give brief responses before leaving the room.
I turned to walk away from the door when it finally opened. Levi was standing, using his cane rather than his wheelchair.
"Y/n?" He looked like he was surprised to see me.
"Levi, can we please talk about...earlier?"
He immediately tensed up and looked away, which told me he was about to shut down again. I wasn't going to allow that to happen.
"There's nothing to talk about." He sat back down on our bed so I sat beside him, making sure to give him space because I knew he hated being touched in moments like this.
"I understand why you're embarrassed about it but you shouldn't be. Levi, I'm your partner. You should feel safe coming to me with your problems but you hide them."
"What are you talking -"
I cut him off, feeling my frustration starting to rise. "You didn't tell me you needed to go when we were at the market until you couldn't hold it anymore. Why? Why do you do this to yourself? Why don't you trust me enough to let me help you?"
Levi was silent, avoiding eye contact with me. I knew he was uncomfortable and I hated that I was the source of it but I also knew this conversation needed to be had.
I reached and gently grabbed one of his hands, running my fingers over the back of it. "I'm not asking you to do anything you're uncomfortable with. Just speak up when you need the bathroom and I'll help you. Don't just sit there and wait until you can't hold it anymore."
Levi nodded, still avoiding eye contact with me. I could see a faint blush on his cheeks. I leaned in and gave him a kiss on the forehead before deciding to leave and give him space. Though he wouldn't admit it out loud- I knew how shy he was about his needs.
After that I left the room to give him some space. All cornering him would do is make him lock down more.
A few hours passed before I decided to cook his favorite meal. I started preparing everything when I realized I was missing the key ingredients.
"Y/n?"
I turned to see Levi in the doorway. This time he was in his wheelchair rather than walking. He had his good days and his bad days in terms of being able to walk.
"Yes?" I noticed the look of regret on his face. It was something I had become very familiar with seeing lately. This wasn't the first time I had tried to have this conversation with him.
"About the market earlier..."
"I'm not upset with you." I stopped him, knowing he was about to apologize. "I just don't want you to put off your needs like that constantly."
"I know." He sighed, fidgeting with his hands how he often did when he was uncomfortable. "I'll say something next time."
"Thank you." I smiled as I went back to debating on whether to make something else or go back to the market to grab some.
"What are you making?"
"Your favorite, chazuke!"
Levi looked at me, a sparkle in his eye despite his lack of a smile. "Thank you but don't you need salmon for that?"
"I was going to go back to the market to grab some. Wanna come with?" I decided in that moment after seeing his face light up that I had to make it.
He looked skeptical but he eventually agreed. It was a short walking distance from the house so getting there wasn't too inconvenient. Plus the weather was nice so it was a great opportunity for me and Levi to go out together again. Especially now that the sun was starting to set.
"Remember what you promised." I reminded him as we got ready to leave.
Levi blushed slightly and avoided eye contact but he nodded which was satisfactory enough for me. I walked behind him, pushing his wheelchair while we made small talk until we reached the market.
"Do you need anything?" I asked.
Levi shook his head. I started to notice something was off about him. He started acting nervous, which I knew he often got in crowds. I rested a hand on his shoulder to try and offer subtle comfort. He was shaking slightly, I noticed.
The market was surprisingly busier than it was when we had come earlier on in the day. While I walked around, Levi started fidgeting slightly in his chair. It was subtle at first but it became pretty obvious eventually. "Do you need to pee?" I whispered softly so no one around could hear.
"Yeah." He admitted with an urgency to his voice.
"Are you having another bladder spasm?" I really hoped that wasn't the case because I knew how they usually affected him. They either caused him mild pain or caused him to completely pee his pants. There was never a middle ground.
"I don't know...I'm not sure but it started feeling really urgent out of nowhere." He looked around, presumably for a bathroom. "Y/n...." His voice was soft, barely above a whisper. "I really really need..."
I cut him off by quickly wheeling him towards the nearest public bathrooms. I knew Levi hated using them because they were dirty but I had to imagine it was better than the alternative.
I could see Levi trying his best to stay still but he kept shifting, wiggling his hips, even crossing his legs. I pretended not to notice as we made our way to the bathrooms. There was a small line, which made him audibly sigh in disappointment.
"Can you wait in line this long?"
He looked up at me with pleading eyes that told me all I needed to know.
"Okay...well maybe there's another bathroom nearby. Can you wait just a few more minutes while I look?"
"I'll try."
I quickly pulled him out of the bathroom line, scanning the area for any alternative bathrooms that didn't have a line. I knew Levi wasn't going to ask if he could skip someone else in line and I didn't want to see him wet himself again because of how down on himself he gets afterwards.
"Are you okay?" I asked whilst still trying to find somewhere he could pee.
His legs were crossed so tightly that it looked painful. His hands were balled into fists, clutching the material of his pants close to his crotch.
"Hurry. Please."
The please was so soft that I barely heard him. It was rare hearing Levi sound so vulnerable and meek. I reached down and rubbed his shoulder. "It's okay you're going to be fine."
A large bathroom sign caught my eye. I quickly rushed over to it with Levi, who now had a flushed red face. He was probably embarrassed.
"Hey...there's a bathroom just up ahead." I shouted enthusiastically.
Levi didn't say anything or even acknowledge that he heard me. I glanced down out of curiosity and saw a small wet spot blooming on his crotch. His pants were dark so it was hard to see until it started getting bigger.
"Dammit." I saw one of Levi's hands start to shake with the effort it was taking to keep holding it. "I can't...I won't make it, y/n."
"You will." I continued pushing him until we finally painstakingly made it to the bathroom. Unfortunately, Levi already had a steady stream coming from him at that point. It was far too late for the bathroom by then.
I took my jacket off and draped it over him so he could at least have some measure of privacy while he soaked himself and his wheelchair in the middle of the public market. Unsure of what else to do, I quickly ran to a nearby stand and picked up the missing ingredients for the chazuke that I was missing.
When I returned to Levi a few minutes later, he looked more uncomfortable than before. I held up the salmon to show him I had gotten it in hopes of cheering him up.
It didn't help and seemingly only made the situation worse. "We can go back home now."
It was painfully quiet the entire way back home. Levi immediately went to take a shower, leaving me to finish cooking since I now had the necessary ingredients.
By the time I was finished, Levi still hadn't come out of the bathroom. I knew he didn't take long showers so I decided to go check on him. I knocked on the door gently. "Levi? The food is almost ready."
He opened the door and my (eye color) met bloodshot red eyes. Has he been crying??
"I didn't intend for that to happen."
Before Levi could continue, I pulled him into a hug. It was a gentle but firm one that he eagerly returned. I rubbed his back with one hand and played with his hair with the other.
I was surprised when he started trembling in my arms. Then he started sniffing and...was he crying??
I had seen Levi go through PTSD flashbacks, nightmares, and injuries without flinching. What could possibly have gotten him so worked up?
"I'm sorry, y/n." His voice broke so he cleared his throat despite the obvious signs that he was crying. "I ruined it again."
"No you didn't." I whispered, still threading my fingers through his hair. "It was an accident. That could have happened to anyone. It could have just as easily happened to me."
"I hate it so much." He sobbed, not bothering to hide it anymore. It was so unusual hearing him cry at all- much less sob. "It's so humiliating. I didn't need to go until we got there!"
"Shhh." I rocked our bodies from side to side while I held him. "I know you don't believe me fully when I tell you this but it doesn't bother me. At all. I know you have it in your head that I'm disgusted by you or that I think less of you but I don't. I couldn't."
Levi didn't say anything else, only continued to softly cry in my arms for a few more minutes before finally pulling away and wiping angrily at his eyes.
"Stop." I pulled his fists away from his eyes and lowered them to his side. "It's okay to cry. I'm really proud of you for letting that out."
"Thank you, y/n. For everything. I really mean it...I don't know what I would do without you." He leaned in for a kiss which I gladly gave him.
"I'm always here for you, Levi. We can look into solutions for this together. Maybe it's worth seeing a doctor in the future if you keep having this problem."
He nodded in agreement and I wiped the rest of his tears away. "Come on, we have chazuke to eat!"
This time he did offer a small smile at the mention of his favorite food.
