More snaps from Craig of the Creek.
@targetsbound (snow war cont. without ask box)
Diana laughed as a snowball was thrown at her. “Now hold on, I’m making a snow fort as well to hide behind. Feel free to pause our battle to make yours too. Victor taught me how to make one as well as snowballs. Maybe later we can make a snowman as well.”

Snow War: Experience Fun in Snowball Battles
Snow War game is bringing fast, chaotic first person snowball fights to both Linux PC and Windows. All of this is possible thanks to the creative spark and steady dedication of the developer Gnomecraft. Working to make its way onto Steam Early Access. It’s kind of wild to think this started as a scrappy Half-Life mod and now, after two decades and six long years of rebuilding, Snow War is finally coming back. Not as a nostalgia trip. As something real. Something you and I can actually jump into again.
This one’s been a long time coming
I remember when weird little mods were where magic happened. No big budgets. No hype machines. Just people making stuff because they liked it. Snow War was exactly that, a chaotic, ridiculous, way too fun first person snowball fights that somehow stuck with people. Fast forward 20+ years, and Teemu Polvi, the original creator, never let it die. That’s the part that gets me. Most projects like this fade out. Life happens. People move on. But he didn’t. He came back, rebuilt it, and pushed it all the way into a full standalone game. And not alone, either. Programmer Jan Hartung stepped in as the second core dev, helping carry the technical weight. Then you’ve got Atte “Tawsky” Leppänen handling the music, which honestly matters more than people think, it sets the whole vibe when you’re mid-match, dodging snowballs like your life depends on it. They even pulled in local developers at key moments, shaping the game into something bigger than just a throwback.
Snow War still feels like a community game
That spirit never left. Polvi straight up said it, this has always been community-driven. And Early Access? That’s not the finish line. That’s the starting point. You can feel it in how the game is built. Up to 16 players in chaotic PvP matches. Online through Steam or LAN. You can change your character details, mess with power-ups, and even spin up your own custom server with your own rules. That last part hits different if you’ve been around PC gaming for a while. It means freedom. It means this isn’t locked down or over-designed. It’s a sandbox for good fun and serious competition at the same time.

First person snowball chaos, but modern
Let’s be real, “first person snowball” sounds goofy. But that’s exactly why it works. You’re not dealing with hyper-realistic military shooters here. This is fast, messy, unpredictable fun. Power-ups flipping the match. Players scrambling. Snowballs flying everywhere. It’s the kind of gameplay where you laugh mid-fight and still try way too hard to win. And now it’s powered by Unreal Engine, so it’s not stuck in the past visually or performance-wise. For Linux players especially, that matters. It’s launching on both Linux PC and Windows right out of the gate, which already tells me the devs get their audience.
The price feels like a throwback too
Here’s another thing I didn’t expect: it’s not trying to drain your wallet. Snow War launches into Steam Early Access on April 3rd at $9.99 USD / £8.37 / 9,75€, with a 30% launch discount. That’s… kind of refreshing. No weird monetization vibes. Just buy it, play it, and be part of what it becomes.
Why I’m actually paying attention to this
Look, I’ve seen a lot of indie revivals. Most of them don’t hit. Also, sign up for the Playtest to play the Linux build ahead of release. But this one feels different. Maybe it’s the history. Maybe it’s the fact the original creator is still leading it. Or maybe it’s just that the idea, pure, chaotic first person snowball fights in a multiplayer setting. Something gaming lost along the way. Not everything needs to be serious. Not everything needs to be competitive esports level stress.
