Quite the winter storm that we had on Sunday. What kind of ice melter did you use? According to the Michigan Concrete Association, ice melters, even those advertised as “safe for concrete” can cause damage to concrete. They say you should never use products that contain magnesium chloride or calcium chloride. Watch out if you have new concrete that was poured this year. It can take up to one year for concrete to thoroughly “dry out.” Therefore, concrete in its first year is more susceptible to the pressures of freeze/thaw cycles. Using sand for traction on new concrete is the best, and ordinary rock salt (sodium chloride) is recommended.
