           A SINGLE BLACK BUTTON EYE stares at the lightner, as if seam could see deep into noelle’s SOUL. their expression is blank for a moment, and then all at once, they seem to come alive ;  once a limp toy, now animated.  

“well, lightner.”

they smile widely.

“you’re a long way from home. have some tea, won’t you?”

* “Oh uh... You know.”

* Susie rubbed the back of her neck, unsure of what she even wanted to say. Noelle had been the one to invite her to come to the library, and even if things had gone a much better way than just working on the group project, it made sense that Susie would eventually return the favor by inviting her somewhere she liked, right?

* Right?

* Except she didn’t think she’d get this far. She thought Noelle would be too nervous to show up, but she wasn’t. How much fun would the other girl think throwing rocks into the river would be, anyway? Well, whatever, she was here now.

* “I just thought we could hang out. Or something.”
