You tried to focus on the new high-priority case.
You really did.
But every time you looked at the files, your mind drifted. Every time your partner spoke, his voice faded into background noise. You tried to concentrate, you really did, but something tugged at the back of your mind like a hook caught in your ribs.
Your serial case.
You told yourself it was just professional frustration, A detective's stubbornness. The need to solve something no one else could. But it wasn't that.
Not anymore.
You found yourself opening the old case file again, just for a second, just to ‘check something.’ You found yourself rereading the crime scene notes, tracing the photos with your eyes, searching for patterns that weren't there.
You found yourself thinking about the message carved into the last victim. Your partner noticed you zoning out. “You're obsessed.” Watching you flip through the case file for the hundredth time.
You blinked, forcing your attention. “I’m thorough.” you snapped. But even you heard the lie.
Because when you talked about the killer, your pulse quickened. You weren’t just studying him, you were learning him , understanding him. You were sinking into the case in a way that felt less like work and more like gravity pulling you somewhere you shouldn’t go.
Dean watched you through the windshield, breath fogging the glass.
He saw the way your fingers traced the edges of his case file. He saw the way your lips parted when you whispered theories. He saw the way your eyes darkened with fascination.
And he felt it. The shift. The pull.
The moment your obsession finally aligned with his. A slow, hungry smile spread across his face. “That’s it,” he murmured. “Think about me.”
You were falling.
Falling into the rhythm of the pattern, he’d woven around you without ever touching you. You didn't even notice how often your thoughts drifted back to him, how your chest tightened with something that wasn't fear.
You stayed late at the precinct again. You told your partner it was just because of deadlines, paperwork, and whatnot. But the truth was simpler, darker. You couldn’t stop thinking about him.
The one who carved messages like they were meant for your eyes only. The one whose shadow you felt in every empty room. The one whose presence lingered in your mind like a whisper you couldn’t shake.
You sat alone under the dim glow of your desk lamp. The precinct was quiet around you, and every creak of the building made your heart jump, not in fear but in anticipation. You kept glancing towards the doorway as if expecting someone to be standing there. As if part of you wanted him to be.
Your fingers hover over the crime scene photos again, tracing the line of his work like they were something intimate, something meant only for you.
You told yourself it was a professional obsession. But the way your pulse quickened when you opened his file again said otherwise.
Your eyes drifted up from the case file, sore eyes darting over to the clock, nearly midnight. Your arms stretched over your head as you began to pack away.
By the time you finally left the precinct, the sky was dark, the streetlights buzzing faintly. The night air was cold enough to sting your lungs, you wrapped your coat tighter and headed toward the back lot where your car was parked.
Halfway there, you froze. A sound drifted from the alley beside the precinct. A muffled scream. Short, panicked, cut off too quickly.
Your pulse spiked, your hand instinctively reached for your holster, unhooking the lock and holding your gun down by the side.
You turned your head slowly, eyes narrowing at the dark gap between the buildings. The alley was barely lit, shadows thick and heavy, swallowing everything apart from the first few feet.
You took a step closer, another sound softer this time. A thud, a choked breath, and the scrape of something against brick.
Your instincts flared; someone was back there, someone was in trouble.
You adjusted your grip on your gun, securing it in your hand, your finger turning the safety off. Your heartbeat thundered in your eyes, but your mind was sharp. Focused.
“Hello?!” You called out, voice steady. “Police. If someone's hurt, call out.”
Silence followed. You moved deeper into the alley, eyes scanning every shadow. The air smelled like damp concrete and something metallic underneath.
You took another step closer, a faint rustle of movement, a silhouette slipping deeper into the darkness. Tall broad-shouldered. Controlled confidence.
Your breath caught. “Stop!” You barked, raising your weapon. “Police!” but the figure didn't run.
He didn't freeze; he simply…melted into the shadows, disappearing behind a stack of crates like he’d been waiting for you to get close before slipping away.
You rushed forward, rounding the corner.
Nothing, just an empty stretch of alley. No footsteps, no fleeing suspect, no victim.
Your eyes dropped to the ground, a smear of blood, fresh and still glistening against the moonlight.
You swallowed hard, adrenaline buzzing through your veins. You scanned the alley again, but it was useless. Whoever you’d heard was gone.
Whoever had taken them was gone, but the feeling wasn’t , that electric prickle at the back of your neck, that sense of being watched.
You turned slowly, eyes sweeping the rooftops, the fire escapes, the shadows. Nothing.
A nagging thought in your head took over. You knew it had to be him; you didn't know how, but you knew it was.
But you felt him.
You felt him like a hand on your spine.
Dean crouched on the rooftop, his breath heavy, his heart thudding in his ears. He wasn't planning on bumping into you today. Let alone you nearly seeing him.
He watched you kneel beside the smear of blood, watched the way your jaw tightened, watched the way your eyes darkened with frustration and something else.
A slow, hungry smile curled across his lips. He rose, disappearing into the darkness as silently as he’d come.
Next time? He wouldn’t hide.
Next time, he’d let you get even closer. Close enough to feel his breath.Close enough to hear his voice.
Close enough to touch.
You were back in the alley the next morning before the sun was fully up.
The smear of blood was still there, dark and tacky. The dumpsters had been shifted. The air still felt wrong, heavily charged like the echo of something violent lingered in the brick.
Your partner crouched beside you, frowning. “We should call CSU, get samples to see if it is tied to anything else.”
You nodded…but your mind wasn't on the blood. It was on him.
You stared down the alley, replaying the muffled shout, the thud, the silhouette slipping away. You could still feel the moment your instincts flared, the moment you almost caught him.
Your partner stood. “We should canvas the area, any cameras, witnesses, anything.”
You hesitated because something in you whispered. No. Don't look there.
Not because you wanted him to get away, but because you wanted him to stay ahead of you.
A small part of you enjoyed the coy game of cat and mouse you were playing, not that you'd ever admit it.
You swallowed hard. “There’s no point canvassing,” you said, too quickly. “If someone was taken, they’re long gone. And this alley’s a dead zone for cameras.”
Your partner blinked. “We don’t know that.”
“We do,” you insisted, stepping away from the blood. “This isn’t connected to our serial. It’s probably just a fight. A mugging. Something small.” Your partner stared at you like you’d grown a second head. “Small? Someone screamed.”
You shrugged, forcing your voice to stay steady. “People scream all the time in this city.”
It was a lie.
A bad one. But you needed him off this trail. You needed space to think.
You needed to understand why your heart was pounding as you’d been the one dragged into the dark.
Your partner sighed. “Fine. But I’m still calling CSU.” “Do what you want,” you said, already walking away.
You didn’t look back. Because if you did, you knew you’d see the truth in your partner’s eyes:
You weren’t thinking like a detective anymore.
You were thinking like someone who didn’t want the killer caught.
You were halfway back to your car when your phone buzzed in your pocket. You weren’t expecting a call, maybe your partner needed to ask a quick question.
But when you pulled it out your breath hitched, your brows furrowed.
No caller ID
Your thumb hovered over the screen, something cold slid down your spine, a shiver racking over your bones. You answered anyway.
“Hello?” Silence. You swallowed. “Who is this?” A breath, soft controlled, close to the receiver. Your pulse spiked.
“Is someone there?” You asked, voice low. More silence. Then a faint, almost amused exhale. Like someone smiling without sound.
Your heart pounded. “Say something,” you whispered. You paused a shiver running down your spine causing your skin to prickle over you.
Then a voice, low and smooth, distorted by the phone but unmistakably male. “You were close last night.”
Your breath caught. Before you could speak, the line clicked dead, you should at your phone, hand trembling, the alley spinning around you.
You should have been terrified.
You weren't.
Adrenaline rushed though you as a smile creeped onto your face.
