Let me come in with a hot take. I dislike sns fics that make sasuke and naruto toxic. Their bond is essential plot point but its not the only thing that makes both of them who they are. Narutos dream is to become a hokage, and he pushes himself again and again in many instances with other villans or when learning a new skill (like meeting his dark self in the waterfall). He wins over his opponents by surpassing his own limitations. He grows as a person. He finds strength in himself, in his idea of unconditional love, and his bond with sasuke is a representation of that, not his sole goal in life. Sasuke has his own path, one of understanding his hero, itachi, and fighting against the system that on the grand scale hurt individual people as himself and itachi. His bond with naruto represents the negative polarity of the same will to change. Not only creation (love) is nessesary for bringing of change, but also destroying the old narratives, so something new can blossom and grow. And to be able to destroy toxic systems sasuke is the one who has to see why is it bad in the first place. Naruto and sasuke both have their own minds, personalities, and lives outside their bond. Fics that only build on their obsession with one another miss the mark completly because their bond is the product of who they both are as people, and not the only thing that pushes them to act. Their bond helps them both grow as individuals. By making them focus soley on eachother, some fics end up having naruto bound to an unrealistic standard of wanting to CHANGE sasuke - which is diffrent than wanring to show him the beauty of loving creation which is home simbolic of. And they also end up having sasuke acting and talking hurtful, deceptive, manipulative since he is so traumatised or lost. Sasuke was always clear with his intentions because he is as a character also true to his word, and acts upon the same will to try and make the world a better place, just by destroying hurtful systems in place. He is destructive, but not manipulative.
