mm. the pervasiveness of assumed masculinity in the egbert house goes down to even the smell. all those notes assuring june of her supposed manhood and masculinity absolutely reeking of men's colognes...
'oppressive' cannot even begin to describe that kind of atmosphere. especially for a young girl to grow up in, all alone...
on one hand, i think her propensity for tantrum throwing is interesting. she lives her life in a constant state of repressed frustration, and only lets it out on things that don't seem to matter. at least, not to the outside observer. it's always the little things. that's just how it is. when you face a million tiny injustices every day, any one of them could be the straw that broke the camel's back. even if that straw is born of kindness - like someone lovingly making food for you that you just cannot stomach right now.
again, she's a very strongly written child. she lacks agency in ways children often do, and reacts to it exactly the way a child would. especially one that's as deeply repressed and closeted as june. i feel this is an aspect of her writing that's often overlooked, because a sizable chunk of readers are teenagers who have not unpacked that. and, unfortunately, even more lack experience of or even basic knowledge about transmisogyny, how it operates, and the effects it has on trans youth
on the other hand, she's literally cutes. it's cutes. she's cutes. you literally agree with me.
its really funny how much rose doesnt know anything. itd be one thing if she just flatly believed in the DSM, but every time she reaches for a "diagnosis" its just blatantly something shes pulling out of her ass. shes so funny
plenty of ink has been spilled on this already, and im not losing sleep about it or anything, but it is still kinda funny how many people forget most of dave's introductory traits. like how many fandomites will claim obsession to detail but never touch her interest in photography or taxidermy or obscure indie musicians. too focused on making cookie cutter yaoi i guess? theyre good narrative tools, even if none of them got used in homestuck itself. too big of a story to fiddle with that kind of domestic stuff for too long, you know how it is.
also extremely funny (sardonic) how many people will absolutely die on the hill that dave isnt racist when her introduction ends with That. ok. why are you all so white
it's like. you have to understand why rose hates her mom so much, right? "oh, but she shows her so much love. see, look at how much money she spends on her!" this is likely the exact mindset mom lalonde has. it's the mindset a lot of parents have. huge, pricey gestures like this are completely hollow if they lack any genuine foundation, and blood relation is not a replacement for actual real emotional connection.
we see it right here. every time rose walks by the fridge, she doesn't feel loved. she's just reminded of how her mother would seemingly rather bribe her with big, gaudy displays of wealth than just spend an afternoon with her. she would rather spend $15,000 entire USD on a picture frame - and even more on people to set it and weld it to the door! - than she would just, like, hang out with her kid. check in on her and mean it. something.
mom lalonde is trying, but her whole approach is wrong. this is very plainly child neglect. rose is right to resent her mother.
metatextually, this is a random forum game comic hussie had made a while ago, and was inserting because she's addicted to callbacks. acknowledging this fact before i get into the meat here.
can you fucking imagine being dave? like, specifically, can you imagine growing up like this? being "raised" by bro, who beats the shit out of you so routinely you're already steeling yourself for sword combat the moment you see a weapon out of place
who keeps the kitchen stocked full of weapons instead of food, and intentionally packs his possessions in the kitchen appliances to make eating even harder
keeping the place a dangerous wreck all the time, leaving a trail of threats of imminent destruction everywhere he's been
you're having some crises today. your only friends are in danger, you're failing to choke down the realization that you hate your home, you hate your brother, and you hate your life. a sword is missing from the rack. the air reeks of metal, sweat, and heat. nothing's going right. you're trying to keep your cool. you've gotta keep your cool. you need to keep your cool.
then you see that fucking comic taped to the door. waiting for you to read it. what the fuck man. jesus christ. i'd lose my shit. can someone get her the hell out of there
i do like that, for june at least, commands input from an exile seem to manifest... basically the same as somewhat unrealized plurality? lot of emphasis on, like, understanding the signals being given, but not necessarily hearing them. it's subconscious, it's reflex, it's done with half-knowledge that there's outside forces at play, yet no clue what those 'outside forces' are or even where 'your' thoughts, actions, and feelings are coming from
she knows someone's in her head, but she doesn't know who, and she doesn't know what they're saying, but she knows what they're telling her and how they're feeling about it, vaguely. it's neat!
