BEEF RENDANG The beef rendang needs no introduction. Well loved by many Asians from Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. Said to originate from the minangkabau ethnics groups of Indonesia. Over time through migration of various ethnic groups its become a main stay for Malaysians and Singaporeans as well. This recipe has been in my family for generations. A must have for family get togethers. Best served with rice, nasi lemak or lemang (2nd pic). The intense flavour and aroma will keep you wanting more. PENANG LAKSA Penang laksa (Malay: Laksa Pulau Pinang), also known as asam laksa from the Malay word for tamarind, comes from the Malaysian island of Penang. It is made with mackerel (ikan kembung) soup and its main distinguishing feature is the asam or tamarind which gives the soup a sour taste. The fish is poached and then flaked. NASI AMBENG If your ever in Singapore and want to have something really traditional I'd definitely recommend dropping by the hajjah mariam cafe in Singapore and try their nasi ambeng. It's an explosion of flavours beyond your imagination. Truly an experience. Communal or sharing style dining which is my favourite, just makes the whole experience very intimate and cheerful. All dishes are placed in a huge tray and it's not overly spicy. Dishes are javanese malay style. Consist most of the time of eggplant sambal, rendang, potato cutlet, sambal goreng, sambal tempeh and many more side dishes to choose from. Unlike versions from other countries the Singapore version is very authentic in my view.
