hey is anyone else a little surprised by the normalization of fangirl culture in media portrayals
like is it strange of me to be taken off guard by pop culture representations of fangirl behavior as a fairly common characteristic, when it was once strictly limited to anonymous internet circles? characters like Tina from Bob’s Burgers or Kat from Euphoria, One Direction slash fic flashback and all. any standardization of women, particularly young girls, just being out-and-proud about writing sexual fic (or, in Tina’s case, i think even RPF “friendfiction”??) or shipping characters.
obviously part of this is just the inevitable standardization of emerging cultural trends, and nerd girls have been around since time immemorial. but the VERY specific 2000-2010s nerd girl, and all her hypersexual content and focus on media consumption, always felt to me like a character none of us were supposed to see on a TV screen. A. is that just me, influenced by the lingering zilennial urge to keep internet practices anonymous? and B. are gen z teens seeing and normalizing this kind of fan culture among otherwise casual consumers? has fic officially hit mainstream? (i mean obviously, but as tiktokkers would say: do normies read fic???)
the same way everyone’s pointing at tiktok and twitter as the Plato’s cave shadow-puppet shows of old-school tumblr trends and behaviors becoming mainstream: did the Early Tumblr Nerd Girl just become a standard archetype of teenage girldom???
Y'all these white fragility tears are delicious
*sip sip* I haven't even opened the reserve label of "I'm poc and I'm not offended so it's not offensive" yet.
Everyone should read or listen to books on the unconscious shadow. just do it. it might give you realizations about why people have treated you badly, why you've done similar things, why we do shit to each other, all that good meaty brain stuff
quick poll
