The Bouncing Souls' Eighth Annual Home for the Holidays at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park this past weekend was a hometown throwdown of epic proportions.
I had the pleasure of seeing the first (Dec. 26) and third (Dec. 28) nights, and both were killer. Night one was filled with old school sound and fury, and Bane absolutely destroyed it with their opening set.
Night three had a solid opening by Jesse Malin (with Cat Popper on bass!) and a career-spanning set by the Souls that leaned heavily on the melodic stuff.
The conceit of this year -- the band invited fans to come up and play with them on select songs -- was absolutely perfect. There's never really been a divide between the band and its fans; one always gets the feeling that there's as much fun being had on stage as in the crowd Letting the fans join, and on the last night, become, the band, made that message louder and clearer than ever. We're all true believers, all the way.
Now, while I recover from a punk rock glory hangover, enjoy some pics I snapped from the side of the stage. And, Yahoo's streaming the Souls' Dec. 28 show here.
She's driving down the shore on a Jersey afternoon
She's driving down the same old roads her parents took her through
Hypnotized by those broken lines, broken records lost in time
She's turning down the road that is new
Stepping out of the Asbury Lanes in a midnight snow
Skeletons of this old town, feels like it's coming alive
Riots and corruption, New Jersey roots
This songs for the keys to the engines of our growing up
Born to run
and be free!
I <3 The Bouncing Souls.
"we wanna say thanks to the music in our lives Forgive ourselves for all those lies Send some love to all the lonely Don’t forget we’re all one family Thanks to the music in our lives for helping us to survive Lost in one lonely dream, born to run and live free”
