cigarettes & feelings - the haunt
dunno why it’s hitting me now but i’m having thoughts about the “we wouldn’t run out on a mate” “why not, i know i would” scene.
i’ve always loved it, it’s such an interesting but fleeting moment mark and simon share that can easily be tossed aside in favor of the big ‘begbie makes a mess again there it is we’re not a happy group of friends we’re a mess actually’ scene that comes after it. they’re all joking about them stealing the money as soon as one leaves the table, but they’re not gonna actually do it. they’re all selfish people (three of them at least, love u spud) but they wouldn’t do that, right? begbie isn’t letting that rare luck go and is suspicious of them and everyone else because that’s the way of living he knows, but he’s gonna honor the deal and simon is the worst person you’ll ever meet yes, but i don’t think he was actually going to do it, especially not to mark. so why does he say that? why is he being so open and honest about it? i mean it’s not like they don’t know each other and what kind of shitty things the other could do, but why that answer out of all the jokes or approving remarks he could’ve chosen from. i understand the purpose it serves for mark; it makes him seriously consider the idea and it later helps him excuse himself with simon, because he would’ve done the same if he thought about it first (which, if you think about it, doesn’t really mean anything). WHICH BRINGS ME TO MY POINT (finally): i like to think that from simon’s pov, those words were his way of asking mark to steal the money and run away together. he was subtly suggesting the idea, like a “you know i’d be down for it, right?” especially if you notice the way he keeps staring almost curiously to see if mark gets it. answers in his usual sick boy style but with simon’s honesty and studies mark’s reaction. and mark stares right back at him, a bit surprised and maybe considering those words and. AND . if mark /did/ pick up on the implicit proposal it adds another layer of hurt to the whole thing because he was like “no, i need to leave you behind too. i’m never gonna quit with you by my side”. agghhh it makes so much sense. to me at least it does. thank you sickrent brainrot <3
