It was at university that Tim cultivated the stiff-upper lip persona that was to carry through to his career in the Senior Service as a member of the officer corps, and would ultimately ensure him a place in the Royal Household. He signed himself T. J. H. Laurence, and in contrast to most of his colleagues (but not all, as Durham was even then considered to be the place would-be Oxbridge undergraduates chose as their second choice) always dressed immaculately in a jacket with shirt and tie, with knife-edge creases in his trousers. This was in the seventies, when university students were notoriously anti-establishment and showed it in their manners, their speech and most of all their dress.

But not so Tim Laurence. He had been brought up to have impeccable manners, and it says much for his character that, in spite of jeers and sniggers from his fellow students, he would always stand up when a woman entered the room, he would not dream of sitting down if a lady was standing on a train or bus, and he would invariably introduce himself formally to any new acquaintance. He combined old-world charm with a natural diffidence that some people found difficult to come to terms with but which others felt was a manifestation of an earlier unsureness in himself. If he did appear to be reserved, it was only with those he did not know very well, and some of the students at Durham said he was well liked and had a great sense of humour, even if he was not regarded as a great socialiser.
