Her voice was barely audible as she stood there with a book in her hand, staring up at the clock on the wall. She was supposed to be home alone and she would have been grateful to finally have some time to herself, but that turned out not to be the case.
Somewhere in another room, a door slammed.
She dropped the book.
Faint whispering followed the bang of the door.
She picked up the book and went after the source of the sounds. It brought her to the kitchen door. It was usually always open, but this time it was closed, leading her to conclude that it had been the door that had slammed shut. She opened it without hesitation and went inside. She didn’t know what or who she had been expecting to find, but it came as no surprise to her when she saw her brother standing in front of the open fridge. The light inside was the only thing lighting up the room, aside from the moonlight coming through the open window.
The cold air made her shiver and the first thing she did was go over to the window (she dropped the book on the table on her way), but before she closed it, she looked out. She couldn’t figure out how he had managed to climb up from there. The apartment was three floors above the ground.
She turned to her brother and said, “If you’re hungry, you could have just asked.”
“You weren’t home,” he replied without looking at her.
“I just got home now,” she stated flatly, then added, “You could be more careful with my doors next time.”
“Oh, that was the wind,” he said as he closed the fridge door.
He had found nothing exciting in there, and so he was stuck with an apple. He took a bite as he walked over to the window and looked outside. In the dark, barely anything could be seen.
“I hope you have a good reason for interrupting my wish.” She pulled out a chair and sat down, sitting back and watching him expectantly.
He took a bite out of his apple, continuing to stare into the darkness. She thought he was ignoring her question, and so she considered leaving to sit in bed and read. It was too late for her to start digging for information anyway. And then he said, “Hypothetical question.”
“Go on,” she narrowed her eyes and slowly said.
He turned away from the window to face her. “If you wanted to get rid of a body, how would you go about it?” The two of them stared at each other in silence. Taken aback by the question, she didn’t know what to say. When he didn’t get his answer, he said, “Well? How would you do it?”
“It depends,” she began.
“No, it doesn’t depend,” he said. “You just need to get rid of a body. How do you do it?”
“It depends,” she repeated.
“Well, that doesn’t help me at all!” he said, turning back to the window.
He was about to open it but stopped when she said, “Leave it. It’s cold outside.”
“It’s not that cold,” he mumbled, then took another bite out of his apple. Speaking more clearly, he said, “It’s fine. It doesn't matter anyway. I’ll go in a minute.” She sensed that this was the part where she was supposed to reassure him that it did, in fact, matter and then go on to give him the answer to his question.
She did neither of those things.
“Okay,” she said. She stood up, took her book, and left the kitchen. Before she could make it to the bedroom, she heard his footsteps behind him. She stopped at the door and let out a deep sigh. “What is it?” she said.
“I need your help,” he said.
“I don’t have time for your stupid hypotheticals right now,” she said.
“Okay, that’s fine. I get that,” he said, hands raised in surrender.
“Do you?” she said.
He dropped his arms and looked away. She didn’t know what to make of his response, but that wasn’t her main concern in that moment.
“I’ll answer your question and then you’ll go?” she asked.
“Yeah, if that’s what you want.”
“Alright, fine,” she said. “At least tell me why you’re asking.”
“Well, you see, it’s…” He trailed off and laughed awkwardly. He was still avoiding making eye contact with her, but now it had somehow become more obvious. “The question, I mean. It’s not…it’s not a hypothetical.” She tilted her head in confusion. “Can I show you something?” he asked. She wanted to say no, but minutes later, she was following him out of the apartment, wrapped up in several layers to protect herself from the cold. They went out onto the street and to his car. He walked around the back and opened up the trunk.
The smell hit her instantly and she backed away, gagging.
All she had seen inside were black bags on top of black bags, but she understood then and there what he had meant.
“So?” he said. “What do we do?”
She had her hand over her mouth, afraid that if she lowered it, everything she had eaten in the last couple hours would come back up. All she could do was shake her head.
He closed the trunk and leaned back against it.
“I was going to just drive down to the lake, leave him there, but then I thought, well, what if someone finds him? Then what do I do?”
She removed her hand from her mouth and blurted out, “You need to go to the police.” He laughed as though just the idea of that was ridiculous. “I’m serious,” she said, which only made him laugh harder.
“I know you are,” he said in between his laughter. He took a moment to calm down, and when he was able to talk in a serious manner again, he said, “Okay, so, you’re gonna help me with this, right?” At that point, she didn’t feel she had much choice. She wouldn’t be able to go back to her apartment and forget about it.
In the end, she said, “I can’t give you an answer, but whatever you do, I’ll…I’ll come with you and… I don’t know, but I’ll come with you.” It was some sort of compromise with herself. She couldn’t let herself be in the dark about it after the fact, but she couldn’t let herself get too involved either.
It wasn’t the answer he wanted, but it was the only one he was getting, so he nodded and said, “Okay. Sure. Fair enough.” He was left to come up with a plan himself. The only thing he knew for sure was that he wouldn’t be going to the lake.
