The author suggests and explores a lot of neat ideas about gems and gem anatomy that make so much sense! Like what I mentioned in my tags for ex, about gems having fangs/sharp teeth. A lot of fusions have fangs/sharp teeth and fusions don’t create something from nothing, so gems must have fangs/sharp teeth! That are maybe almost imperceptible in individual gems and become more pronounced when two or more gems combine. I’m all for gems looking more alien and otherworldly and ‘monstrous,’ and how else do you explain fusions that have teeth like this?
And then the author takes these ideas and shows how they apply to Steven. As half gem maybe he has retractable fangs. And that post made me think there might be more evidence to back an idea like that up. It could be a stylistic choice, giving a character pointy teeth to emphasize their anger is pretty common in anime/manga, but I think the only times this trope is used are by Ruby and Steven, gems.
And SU has a habit of turning cartoon rules on their head. Violence you think Steven survives because he’s a cartoon is actually because he has superhuman strength and healing. Who’s to say the sharp teeth that show when Steven growls here are not actually because he has some sharper than human teeth?
It’s a great read. I really love Steven being not as human as he seems, and this fic delivers. My only complaint is that it’s not longer.
