Next up in my So Weird marathon is Vampire. I’m not a “monster” fan really, never cared about vampires, werewolves, etc. (IMO witches are humans or at least human-like. But if you’re talking about cackling, warty versions, I’m not a fan of those either.) Vampires/werewolves are almost boring to me, how much can you do with the same old characteristics and moody, dark themes?
Long story short, I wasn’t looking forward to this episode, even considered skipping it. I know objectively it’s good - vampires pretending to be honor students! Jack/Gabe cuteness! Rick is mentioned! All the ingredients are there, I just can’t make myself care about the monster-of-the-week. It doesn’t help that the actor playing Brent is cringey and obvious as the “bad guy pretending to be good,” even his evil scenes aren’t great.
Since I’ve gotten that out of my system, I do enjoy some aspects of this episode. I love the minor story line where they address Fi’s grades, emphasizing that she’s very smart but just doesn’t like school. The sibling moments through the episode are sweet, and Fi’s little romance with Pete is cute. I like Jack’s hero moments at the end, but I did not understand Molly’s calmness in the last scene. Sometimes she’s TOO calm and reassuring when she should be a little more freaked. The OSSN is into some weird ritualistic crap (as she would believe) and all she says is “it’s disappointing when people aren’t who you think they are”? Really Molly? I'd expect her to be angry at the situation and overprotective about Jack and Fi networking online. But anyway, overall Vampire is a decent episode, just not one of my personal favorites.
