Sixteen years ago I attended my first AA meeting. It was a Saturday morning breakfast meeting and I was strong and confident. . What I didn’t realize was Prince Harming (my boyfriend and abuser) was plotting for me to drink. It worked. I felt hopeless as he kept priming the pump inviting my drinking buddies over while I napped, barbecuing, and then bowling. I felt like they were all waiting for me to buckle and grab a beer, so I did. . I didn’t get drunk. I drank just a couple but it was enough for everything I had downloaded about having an incurable disease to take hold. . I wrote alcohol a f*ck off letter (as it reads it could have just as easily been to Prince Harming) and attended my first meeting of over one hundred in ninety days. . As I got stronger and grew more awake and aware I realized if I wanted to truly be free I would need to find another way other than Twelve Steps and AA. . Tomorrow marks sixteen years since I’ve altered my state of being in any way. . It’s become my passion and life’s work to help other women (and men, too) break free from the need to misuse alcohol. . We become what we think about. Where our focus goes, energy flows. As we think in our hearts, so are we. Teachers have been sharing this for thousands of years. .
