Tyrann Mathieu: From Marijuana Addiction To The NFL Draft
Tyrann Mathieu is going to be drafted in the upcoming NFL draft. The question is not whether he will be drafted, but how high? What might hurt Mathieu's draft stock is not whether he can play at a high level, but whether he can stay sober in the NFL. Mathieu, also known as the Honey Badger, was a top defensive back at LSU in 2011 where he was a Heisman Trophy finalist. However, after failing drug tests for marijuana, Mathieu was kicked off of the LSU football team and school in 2012. He then attended rehab where he met his life coach John Lucas. Mathieu completed his rehab and has since set his sights on the NFL draft. Mathieu turned in a solid performance at the NFL combine last month and now has to convince NFL teams that his Marijuana addiction is behind him. Mathieu has said that he is trying to be honest with his past. He is talking about his past marijuana use, as well as the people, places, and things that he had to change. Mathieu also said that he responded to his new found fame in college by getting high. He has also talked about coming up with a plan with whatever team drafts him to help him stay sober in the NFL. I think it is a great thing that Mathieu is making a comeback from his addiction. So many people are unable to overcome their addictions, so it is great to see someone coming back and making it at a high level. As someone in recovery who has encountered marijuana addicts before, it is nice to see Mathieu bringing a voice to marijuana addiction. There is a flawed perception in America that marijuana is harmless and isn't addictive. Mathieu is defeating this perspective by being honest and showing how he wants to make it in the NFL sober, and not on marijuana.
