what was he supposed to say ? how could he even find it in himself to say that he needed to leave ? he had a job to do --------- he had to follow through with it. even if it wasn’t an actual job, not an actual mission, he still felt like he had a duty to fulfill. he was a man of his word and he couldn’t allow himself to back away from what he promised others. but him and natasha ? there was always something. something held him here, something continually kept him by her side. it was like a magnetic pull between them, constantly making him want to stay close to her. but at the end of the day, she had her path and he had his. they would inevitably have to go their separate ways and there would be an end to whatever bubble they found themselves in. it wasn’t easy, no. it wasn’t easy to leave anyone on the team. but something about this felt different.

“i’m sorry.” his words were soft, tender as he looked at her. what he was apologizing for, he wasn’t sure, but the words felt necessary. “i want to stay. i do.” the pull of him to go was somehow being overtaken by the pull of him to stay and it wasn’t easy. none of this ever was. they were a team --------- partners. they had always been a duo held together by chance, but they continued to lead the avengers side by side. how could he just allow them to come to an end already ? “just come with me, nat. stay with me for a little bit, if you want. you don’t have to be stuck in here all by yourself. you don’t have to look at a screen all day waiting for a call from someone. we can set up check ins every week with the team.” would it be that bad to stay ? for him to stay here with her ? he just didn’t know if he could look at the walls of the compound every day knowing that they weren’t able to fix anything. at least not yet. “you deserve to have a life too, nat. we all need to do a little bit of living.”
