okay i have a hot take. maybe lukewarm depending on how you feel.
so, i see alot of liberals/leftists on social media talking about how they aren’t seeing their families during the holidays because they are republicans/maga. some talk about not seeing them at all because they are maga/republicans, which is fine. but one creator who’s name i can’t really remember came out with some video saying essentially you need to cut your republican or maga family off, disown them, whatever or you aren’t an actual leftist/ you don’t really believe in what you believe in.
which i think is total shit, honestly. as a leftist, i am not gonna cut off my relationship with my mother just because she’s a republican. do what you will with your own families, but shaming other people for spending time with their literal parents because of their political views?? like i am sorry i dont want to move out and never see my mother again just because she voted red.
if you have a good relationship with your parents do not feel any pressure to cut them off because of their political views from other people. if you are dealing with a bigoted parent and want to get away from them, completely cool, but i don’t think you should be telling others that they need to
cut off the people that literally gave them life and proceed to try and discredit their values because they don’t want to. if you are dealing with a republican/maga family member that is being genuinely bigoted, it is okay to try and educate them rather than cut them off. the whole point of this post is just, do what you want with your own families, but it doesn’t make anyone less of a leftist/dem/lib if they don’t wanna cut off healthy relationships with their families.
