it was the start of sophomore year at a completely new school, a different state. she was no one here, which meant this was a brand new start. she was not the daughter of a real estate mogul, not the daughter of a spanish model, not the weird blonde who stared at girls just a little too long for their liking. she was no one here and she liked that, she thoroughly enjoyed that. at northshore university, she was sofia norheim, student and new cheerleader for the clovers, a kappa sister. that’s who she was, that's who she was going to continue to be until she graduated.
the young woman sat in the middle row of her english literature class, not too close to the front, but not too far away from the board either -- having tricked herself into believing it was because she didn’t want to attract attention, because, for some reason, she refused to acknowledge the fact that she might need glasses -- proud of what would be her self assigned permanent seat for the rest of the year. as she waited for the class to start and for the rest of her classmates to come shuffling in, she absentmindedly doodled on her new notebook, circles and nothingness (which she claimed to be art) now covering her sheet -- an addition to her doodle folder later.
“hey, do you have a pen?” the voice with the aussie accent distracted her from her doodles and brought her attention to the curly haired boy who was now sitting next to her. sofia was sure she had seem him before, she just couldn’t quite pin point whe - oh, greek row during hell week! he was the one hung around with her new friend, ryan, er no -- she was more then sure she dated him, or at least, they were doing it from the sounds of it. “my boy needs a pen.” with an eyebrow raised, the girl leaned forward, her eyes finding those of the guy who sat next to one sitting next to her.
yes, she had seem him at greek week too -- surrounded by frat brothers and sorority girls. from the jacket he had at on, she deduced he was a hockey player, which explained the popularity. northshore wasn’t just one of the best schools in the U.S. for academics, but they were widely known for their division one teams. from what they told her, if you did a sport while at this university? you were practically a god. you were bound to leave here signed with a pro team. “you’re from kappa, right? my girlfriend is a tri delta.” sofia nodded, “right, ryan...” she nodded, reaching for her purse. her very first friend here. she didn’t know many people she could call that, she wasn’t sure she had any. “i hear- saw. sorry. saw you guys together during greek week.” the blonde bit the inside of her cheek, feeling the heat rise from embarrassment. it wasn’t like she was intentionally trying to listen, but she was choosing between tri delta and kappa and well, while rushing and sleeping over... it’s not like they were quiet anyway!
“here you go, ” sofia said as she handed anthony the pen, wishing she could magically make herself small enough to fit in her purse and hide away from the two boys forever. they definitely thought she was a pervert now, or at least the one next to her did and she hoped to god the other was as stuck in his own world as he seemed to be. “garrett..” the boy next to her called out to other, handing him the pen. graham, what most of the girls called him, must have been his last name. “you probably won’t get that back.” as she began to speak, the professor walked in and immediately introduced himself to the class, getting right into the syllabus and the rest of the year. instead of saying anything, sofia shot the young man a quick look as if to say “keep it, i don’t need it” and returned her attention to the front, stifling a giggle as she tried to ignore the small snore that was now coming from the young man next to her. maybe i should pick a new seat..
