Sofia Santiago was born in Los Angeles as the youngest of three children, to a couple who had met and married during college, and always dreamt of having their own little family – white picket fence house and dog to that. Sofia was the one who made this dream complete, born after two older brothers who already created quite some chaos in the household. Sofia was incredibly close to both of them, just like she was incredibly close with her parents. People often joked about how they were glued together, hardly seen without the rest of their family wherever they went. Her family meant everything to Sofia, a belief her parents had planted within her early on in life. They often spent their whole weekends together, having fun, doing activities, or going away for small trips. Sofia herself was a sports fanatic from the day she was born. Once she was able to walk, she was seen running around everywhere, chasing balls and her brothers alike. She wasn’t picky, adoring any sort of sport she got to try out. And she tried out a lot. From the obligatory dance and horse riding lessons her mother signed her up for, to the soccer and baseball matches of her brothers’ she crashed, only to be signed onto teams by her parents as well. In high school, she was part of several clubs and worked out for a living. She was only ever happy with sweat on her skin. Her parents also raised her not to be shy to admit to who she was, and so her sexuality was never hidden. In fact, her first two relationships were with other girls, and her brothers were quick to make anyone’s life a living hell who thought making a fun comment about her relationships was a good idea.
She was happy, the fights in her family usually happening over something minor, and she knew how lucky she could count herself. Until one day, when she was nineteen years old. Her family was cramped up in her big brother’s small car, on their way to visit her grandmother for the holidays – an old, lovely lady, living on her own out by the road leading towards New York. Their car was crashed by a drunk driver, sending them down the side of the road. Everyone but Sofia died. She still suffers from nightmares about that night – vividly remembering how she was stuck in the car, unable to move her legs, and unable to reach any of her family members to stop them from bleeding out and dying. She did not succeed, and she still blames herself for it to this day. Her injuries were bad, scars covering her stomach, back and legs, but the doctors managed to put her back together, to put her back onto her feet. The scars are a daily reminder of what happened to her. Her demeanor changed as well, her usually friendly mood turning into a more gloomy and dark one, the friendly and soft core only ever coming out when the outer layer was peeled back. She needed to get away from Los Angeles though, too many memories of her family haunting her there. So once she was fully recovered, she decided to go out and find a new place. She eventually decided to settle down in New York, close to her grandmother’s, the only family member she has left. Before the accident, it had been Sofia’s dream to become a professional athlete, but afterwards, that changed. Some pain always remained, and she wasn’t ready to disclose her story to any media or the rest of the world.
There was a time when she took random classes at college in an attempt to find a new way for herself, and while the classes didn’t work out, she still met someone who managed to put a smile on her face. Not in a million years did Sofia ever think she’d see herself as a model to someone’s art piece, especially not when she ended up taking off her top to make the piece complete – but Isla Delgado managed to creep under her skin in more ways than one. There was a definite spark between the two woman. And for someone who had lost their entire family not too long ago, this spark meant everything. Maybe Sofia got in too deep too fast, or maybe it just wasn’t meant to be. While she would have easily called the other woman the love of her life, but a tiny human being turned that back around. Sofia tried everything to make their relationship work despite Isla’s kid, but the other quickly realized that handling a child and a woman who often needed a little more attention wasn’t easy – and in the end, they went their separate ways. Broken hearted, Sofia fell back into the hole she had barely crawled out of. Losing sight of what she really wanted, losing her perspective all over again too. She got herself a boring job as a bartender, as nothing she thought of or tried out seemed to bring back the passion she once felt for sports. Feeling lost in a city as big as New York, Sofia is still trying to find her way, but fails in doing so over and over again.
