What a torture! Finally I read a Jostein Gaarder book to make an own opinion, and for me it was a nightmare to read it. "Sofie's world" is a novel about the history of philosophy. Fair enough. I honestly appreciate the smart summary of philosophy for an easy understanding, it is great because it makes an access for everyone. But what is it with this dumb story next to it? . One time Sofie repeats and transforms the difficult phrases of a philisopher and on the next page she is too dumb to see the context between lego stones and atomes when it's about how something is built. And don't tell me that's because Sofie and her teacher are invented characters by another character who was an unskilled writer, because the real characters are even more insipid and frivolous. . Sometimes the book just seems to follow a cheap hollywood scheme. It is a nice idea that the characters are just trapped in a book of someone else, but is makes no sense to add it to the philosophical doctrine. The plot wants to prove considerations of old philosophers but it often doesn't even work. There is also no excuse in saying it's a children book. Books for children also shouldn't be dumb! I am now going to give away the Gaarder books in my library.
